your favourite Disco3 long-weekend destination & why

As a fairly new overlander, and having just returned from an amazing trip to Namibia and Botswana, I was wondering what all you other African D3 drivers consider to be the ultimate destination for a 3 or 4 day weekend?

I am seriously considering Khutse, and Kubu island, the former based on input from a mate and the latter due to personal experience.

Have you guys got any preferences that you would like to share?

Venice (in the summer, when the canal levels are a little lower) - with a raised air intake, of course!

It's a bit far KL.... Confused

What I meant was African weekender destinations that I could realistically reach from JHB with less than a day's driving.

Don't know where Pangani is, but if its in TZ I think you'd need more than a long weekend to get there

Hi Baben,

Don't know about 'ultimate', but it was suggested to me that I have a look at Molopo for a weekend. NW on the border. A few animals, quiet - not many people. Accessible, but a world away from JHB.

There are also a couple of quieter camps in the Berg - Injasuti, Loteni - from which you can venture into Lesotho via Sani for a day - or longer. However, the real off road stuff there is not something I'd want to do to a R500,000 motor - too much potential for damage.

Never been to Khutse - must go some time. Have been to Kubu, however. Great spot, but is it still being used as a giant toilet?

Been reading Disco3.co.uk for about a year now. Great that we have this Africa forum. Pity there are so few people contributing. I know I am very guilty. Hope it will change. With African travel as it is, would be useful to link-up with like-minded people with similar vehicles to do occasional cross-border trips
Must look at it from the bright side...

HI Limpopo

I've not been to Khutse myself but I keep being told its great and not too difficult a drive, basically lots of sand driving, and lots of wildlife.
We visited Kubu in June, and it was amazing, apart from the roofrack-wrenching corrugations. Didn't see anything to suggest the "giant toilet" you mentioned, so maybe it got cleaned up? Not much in the way of wildlife there, but we saw fresh elephant spoor both days, and tons of cattle dung...

Thanks for the useful input. Will look into Molopo
