Front Mounted Tow Ball

Hi All,

I need my D4 Commercial to tow a large exhibition trailer. The trailer has a front turntable axle, it is therefore a pig to reverse! Does anyone know of any way of fitting a tow ball to the bumper/front of vehicle without modifying the front bumper too much!? Is there something that already exists that can be purchased?

Many Thanks - Louis

Try these:

I'm sure someone on here had one fitted.

I have one of the Watling ones (on a D3 not a D4) for getting a boat down the slipway. Excellent, took about an hour to fit.

I don't have any photos to hand, I'm afraid, but there are some pretty clear ones on Watling's website (no connection, of course, just a customer). The ball itself fits on the end of a 50cm long piece of 50mm square tube which is removable and fits into a socket under the front bumper, offset to one side. When not in use I leave the ball and square tube in the boot and fit the provided rubber bung into the socket and it is hardly noticeable since it does not stick out in front of the bumper.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for your help Stephen, I have now spoken to a lady at Watling and I think I will go for one. Was it easy to fit?

It took about an hour to fit, maybe a bit more. The only slightly tricky part was having to drill out two of the mounting holes for the car's undershield to take the larger bolts supplied with the kit. I don't know, of course, whether this is the same with a D4, or even if the kit is identical.

I don't have any pics, I'm afraid, but the instructions were pretty simple to follow.

Hello, I've got one on my D3. It's FANTASTIC!

Makes turning and moving my twin axle 26' boat trailer very easy. I'm getting my new D4 next Saturday and intend to swap it over. I hope the fittings will be the same?

If I knew how to post pics i would take some and stick them on?!?!

The front recovery hitch cover needs removing to make access easy. Once removed I have never refitted. Also I have two locations on the tow hitch mounting. The standard "off set to one side" mounting comes as standard, making pushing easy as you are looking along side, and hence beyond, the boat. The other is in the center, handy for narrow gate openings you are going to push through!

Definitely worth the outlay and very easy to fit!

Sorry I forgot to add that mine is a Watling one as well. Prices are on their website. I purchased through our workshop at work, helps with the VAT and the subsequent fitting.........

As I said in my earlier post I opted for the additional central mount as well that comes in very handy. I use at work for moving plant trailers around the yard, as well as my boat in the Summer. You won't be disappointed with the push bar, it just makes big trailer manoeuvring sooooooo easy!
