Protect your Paint! Whole car wrapping extreme test.

Hi!

As many of you know from other threads, my car survived a pretty nasty event. (check THIS thread).

Anyways, as part of the preparation Mr. Green I wrapped the WHOLE car with 3m rock guard. This is a very thick, ultra clear paint protection film. Has 5yr warranty, and is meant to stay on the car 'forever' (but it's easy to remove).

I can say that it SAVED Thumbs Up my paint bigtime on the worst off-road damage I've had. Big Cry

Picture Story:

Example of the many mud/dirt walls encountered... Thumbs Up

Yes, it was resting on the doors Big Cry (and wheels ofcourse, good thing they are 2" offset).

So... When we finished I ripped all the mouldings and then some.... (but seems doors are ok Whistle )

Washed, now we see the real damage! Big Cry

Closeup with film on...

So we take film off to get ready for repairs...

Sorry, no pics right after taking film off...

Here comes DentMasters (2hr job, NO work on paint).

End result! Not a new scratch! Door saved! Could not beleive it! I WILL wrap the door again! Mr. Green Mr. Green

Time to go off-road with NO real concerns for paint! 8) :thumbsup

It was a she! Whistle

When I called I asked for the one with the most experience. She has been doing it for 10 years!

The wrap is quoted by the square foot (they do not charge for wasted film). A roll of the stuff is around $700. My car took more than a roll... I did the whole sides, the edges of the hood (12"), edges of roof up to rack. List price was about $1600. (but I got a huge discount). They also did the black door frames in black film (thinner) for looks/protection.

When I go back, we will do the middle of the hood and the sides of the rack in black. Also, cover over all the thin black film with the clear guard...

This is not only nice for offroading, but also for keeping the paint new. Great investment...

I've seen many people have wrapped up their cars with this 3M film before, only for it to go yellow after a year stuck to the metal. It's especially evident for lighter coloured cars. This is most likely caused by all the dirt and Censored that gets embedded into the film itself.

Great scratch protection though! Thumbs Up

Oh... I hope it does not happen to me. The installe and 3M give it 5yr warranty against going yellow. Maybe there are different films/qualities. I do know that this film is 3x the price of competing ones. Well see....

The warning coming from DetailingWorld.co.uk is that if you have put paint protection film on your paintwork, do not wax your car. Apparently a number of waxes react to the film, no matter the brand, and create a yellowing effect. I don't think it'll be an issue for you 'cause yours is Stornoway grey! Thumbs Up

Thanks for the info, will make sure my detailer does not wax the car!

Since I'm covering the whole car, never expected to wax it. I think it's more of an issue where there are only a few patches installed....

Hi,

really interesting post. I was thinking of covering my D4 but I'm getting ridiculous prices quoted in the UK.
Front, bonnet and sides = £2500 .. $4000 Shocked
Did you cover yours yourself or was it done professionally? I'm pretty handy doing this sort of thing with window tint film. is it possible to just buy the Rock guard film for DIY fitting? If so can you give me a web address? I've looked at lots of web sites but no one wants to sell me any full kits or film for DIY Big Cry

Thanks
