Extended roof rails .....or not? |
|
Well finallly the new Disco will arrive on the 4th of Dec...delivery + 7 days.
Am intrested in the extended roof rails (Land rover jobs) however they are not cheap...as you may have already suspected . The kit comes with 2 cross rails - and to have 3, you need to buyer the whole kit again ?
http://www.landrover.com/au/en/lr/discovery-4/accessories/
I like the expedition rack - however it looks unsuppported at the fornt (with no extended roof rail)?
So am keen to look at other options.. - 3 cross rails according to Rola will give us 100kg capacity on the roof? however they did not have pictures of the set up? if anyone has any picts would appreciate if you could post some here?
Rola look have good acessories for the roof on 3 corss bar system, I am keen to try a roof box - and a narrower basket or plat form up there for stuff that does not really neeed to be covered...
Any advice appreciated D4 HSE with rear diff lock, RSE and rear end warmers. Adding bits is fun....getting out there is more

I'd be interested to hear from other people with the extended rails also - I am trying to work out what i want on a new 2.7 D4 and thought i would get the extended roof rails. Is anyone aware of any limitations with the extended roof rails?
Does anyone know if you can fit an expdeition roof rack with the extended rails (ie without using the front feet supports)
thanks
lucas D4 arriving in 2 weeks

thanks for your replies.
Land Rover quoted $1800 for the extender roof rails and 2 cross rails.....(only come in Bright finish).
$640 for 3 Rola roof rails.. so I an leaning towards the Rola set up as the extra 1k can get a roof box/platform other goodies. Just hoping to get a look at a set up first. D4 HSE with rear diff lock, RSE and rear end warmers. Adding bits is fun....getting out there is more

Can't help with your questions about expedition racks, but I purchased extended roof rails directly from a supplier in the UK, and paid around 400 pounds delivered. With the strength of the aussie dollar at the moment, it might be an option worth considering.

There are quite a few UK based retailers who have online stores, but I purchased through Brit Car (http://www.brit-car.co.uk) since they were the only ones prepared to get a quote for the postage. The rails are bl**dy long, and my parcel did suffer a small amount of damage in transit but nothing to get concerned about (see my thread about this).
LR006442 is the part number. I use Thule aero cross bars on them which fit just fine.
I fitted them myself and it was very easy. Some little hints:
- You need to remove the existing cover strips which are held in by little plastic plugs. This is best done by unscrewing them rather than trying to just rip them out like some people have done.
- You need to trim the cover strips which is easiest with a fine-toother hacksaw or similar.
- I also found that there were a few blobs of protruding weld metal at the very rear end of the roof channels (leftover from when the car was first built) which meant I had to trim away a small amount of the roof rail plastic in order for them to sit down properly. I used a dremel to do this, but a small round file would have worked ok too.
I guess overall, even with the trimming above, it would have taken me about an hour to fit. Would probably take me half that if I did it again. Search on the forum and you will find a few stories about people having difficulties installing the rails, but mostly it seems related to the plastic plugs I mentioned above.

hey gotaflat
I found the following solution the most practical and economic:
remove and shorten ss roof track trims as per instructions; install Rhino RTS502 roof tracks and refit shortened trims; install 2 Prorack S6 cross rails including K327 adapter fit kit.
the above items were sourced from TJM for approx $488. The hybrid solution was preferred in that the Prorack cross bars are much quieter, although not silent, than the equivalent Rhino or Rola cross bars that I had previously fitted to both RRS. Prorack do not make roof tracks for the D4, hence the use of Rhino tracks plus adaptors. I used the S6 cross rails although the longer type are also available.....and you can fit 3 if preferred.
hope this helps
