Leaving wheel for a puncture repair - process for winch?
Had to change wifey's front wheel in 6" of snow last week. With the std scissor jack. Great fun.
Planning to pop into the local tyre repair place tomorrow, but if I need to leave the wheel with them - what is the correct procedure for the spare wheel winch?
I've read several warnings that winding it up without a load applied can cause permanent damage ~ so what do are you supposed to do?

Not sure how much load it needs, but maybe ask them for a large old tyre to put on the frame while you winch it up so that it does have some load on it?2014 D4 XS

Any other D3er around you that has a tyre collection you can borrow from?

I can confirm that mine was fine until winched up 'empty', following which it was definitely NOT fine. Long succession of Disco's since 2001...

I held onto the end off the winch while it was wound up ,keeping tension without any problems!!
Winding up is generally not a problem - until you wind it down - I didn't tension mine going up and was a pig to get down - but hanging onto it whilst it was wound up/down sorted it - went up with the wheel/tyre attached was fine.
It only takes about 20mins for a repair - I'd just wait TBH!Mark.

what do you mean by "following which it was definitely NOT fine"
shawnbali blue disco 4 with rear dvd's, privacy glass, pre heat system, heated steering wheel, full size spare, piano black trim, ipod cable, 20 inch wheels and i love it loads more than my TDV8 RRS, KTM 250 EXC 2 Stroke for the real off road stuff
Shawn, just make sure a second person puts tension on the winch from under the car BEFORE you try and wind it down again. If it goes tight, just wind it back and try again. It will come down Mark.

I mean it broke
Sod to wind back out, despite applying plenty of pull to the end. Eventually got it out, but it wouldn't hoist back up properly.
Thankfully replaced under warranty.
If in same situation again, i'd only wind it up 'just far enough' and then get MrsT to pull on it whilst lowering it again Long succession of Disco's since 2001...

Had same problem recently - leave "unwound" and use cable tie to fix loose end up in nether regions until spare available again. Worked fine.

Left mine unwound and used some plastic bags that I had to hand to tie the cable up. Worked ok and I had intended to put some reusable cable ties into the tool kit for next time.
Reading the above has prompted me that cable ties are still on the 'to do' list; but at least I replaced the joke wheel brace with a proper extendable item.
Am I the only one with a LR wheel brace made out of tin foil?

Robbie,
no your not. mine broke when i was tightening a wheel nut after puncture. buy yourself a decent extendable one, have no problems then. or take it back to LR and show them, might get one for free.
just fitted my full size spare back under the car and had no problems at all when lowering the winch cable with no wait on it must have been very lucky
