Bushlore / SA tour.

L&G,

We are planning a trip to SA, and the company Bushlore looks interesting to equip us for our trip.

We are a family of 4 2 adults kids 10 and 7 years, and are looking for a 14 day adventure, I would like to see as much as possible, but SWMBO likes to take things easy.

Looking at Bushlore web site they look like a good set up.

Do any of you have any experience of this company ? What should see and do in SA / botswana ?

Thanks

Glen

Have seen quite a couple of their rentals around , and generally they seem to be a reputable bunch . You may also want to look at Britz http://www.britz.co.za/

Where are you going to be staying in SA because 14 days won't leave you with much time to do both SA and Botswana

Thanks I will look into that company.

We are still planning, everything is open for us, maybe we should stretch the tour for 3 weeks, any good advice is appreciated.

We have now gone from the thinking to booking of flights and taken time off.

We have reserved a Defender 110 from Bushlore in Johannesburg.

We have posted on different fora and am busy reading on the 4x4 comunity.

We plan to travel from Johannesburg on the 7th july and return on 20th.

we looked at going to Drakensburg and lesotho and over to Kruger, then head to VIC falls, but looking at the time frame and after recommendations we would not have the time to do it at leisurely pace.

So now we are just looking at dropping Drakensburg and Kruger and heading for Botswanna and Vicfalls.

We are looking to see and photograph the big five and other game spend some days at vic falls doing the tourist stuff.

We will be camping for the most of it but will have a night in a hotel at Vic falls to get cleaned up after a few days on the the road.

We need to detail plan the route now to book park passes and camp sites so if any of the members here have some recommendations, I would be thankful.

Where the best place to cross, wheres the best place to get food and drink ? before after the border ?

Will we make it into Botswana if we leave joburg at 11:30 - 12:00 and get to a camp in time to set up and get settled ?

If not too far I would like to get over to Drotskys cave, but if it means a lot of driving then we can drop it.

Thanks

I think you are looking at some major travelling to do all the list, especially in a 110. If you go to Drotsky Caves, you need the 110 - very deep sand and for a long way. All other sites you mentioned can be reached in a more comfortable and speedier vehicle. If you want to see as much of the larger animals as possible you must not drop Kruger, unless you go to Chobe ( then you need the 110 again, same reason ). If you want to see Elephant up close, real close, then go camp at "Elelephant Sands" - this is 50 Klm north of Nata on the Kasarne road in Bots and I can't rave about it enough - not expensive either. This is on way to Vic Falls via Bots. Must admit, I am spoiled for all this stuff with the D3, I wouldn't like to go back to a 110 again. Have just been to Kruger, stayed at Talamati, near Satara, and saw all the big stuff except cheatah and most of it everyday, as swmbo says "best place on earth!" If you go up to Drotsky area, then go into Namibia and visit the Caprivi game reserves, coming back into Botswana at the end of Caprivi, into Chobe reserve - very nice trip. But, to do all of your list in 2 weeks would be a task, not a holiday, this is a vast area you are looking at.

Hi Thanks for the advice I am currently getting some good info on the 4x4 comunity website, some nice people down there.

Our route has changed alot since the first post.

basically dropping kruger and SA and concentrating on Botswanna, getting up to Kasane for the trip into Zim, then some days in Chobe and in to the delta and Moremi.

then south to maun, staying a few days in Khama Rhino on the return to Johannesburg before flying home.

Edit we added 7 more days to the trip flying home on the 27th

The extra time is good. If you go up to Kasane first, don't forget to stay at Elephant Sands - well worth it, always been the trip highlight of everybody that I have taken into Bots. Stay two nights and you will not regret it.

Hi Bob,

Have noted to add elephant sands to the list.

We are struggling to find good paper maps, amazon is out, T4A wants 400 Rands to send one map to Norway, local book shop which can get everthing hasnt called back.

The globetrotter series is being upgraded, and will release a new copy in february.

We need to start making bookings now as we are probably late as it is.

Cheers

Hi Glen,
You may be better getting books on the subject : for Bots I would suggest "African Adventurers Guide to Botswana" by Mike Main, Published by Struik, a division of New Holland Publishing in Cape Town. then for Namibia, A A G to Namibia by Willie and Sandra Olivier, published by Southern Book Publishers, again a division of New Holland. They both have good maps for planning your trip and then once here you can pick up a map from Outdoor Wharehose on Botswana - by Tracks 4 Africa - In my opinion the best on Bots.

Home again, what a trip, we have to go back, but next time it will be in SA for most of it. SWMBO wants to go to Drakensberg.

Great Pics and glad you enjoyed our part of the world! Cant wait to welcome you back!!

Drakensberg is truly a magic place and I also did a trip around and through Lesotho recently to explore the mountains to its full. So can definitely recommend it. It is however again a total different experience to the game drive type trip you did this time round.

How did you enjoy the Defender experience again and was the rental company up to scratch?

South Africa truly has a world of things to see in one country.

We had some minor issues with the rental, but it got us through some challenges.

It had done 140 K km and it was well worn a 2009 model.

They say on the web site max 3 years old, but they had tried to upgrade us to a jap car which I promptly said no too so I got this one.

The deep sands were challenging but all in all a great trip.

We tried to drown the Defender, but she still kept going.

Drakensberg looks really appealing SWMBO wants some "space" after being cooped up in the Defender for 3 weeks.
