Timing belt wear signs - DIY question |
|
Hi all,
Very anxious to get a 7 seater manual TDV6 S with a (healthy?) 98k miles on the clock this week.
Being this close to the 105k mark, is there a way I could "visually" check the timing belt and see if it needs replacing without a mechanic?
Thanks to you all!

It will need replacing at 105k regardless. If there are any visual signs, it will be too late.
Anyhow, once you have removed all the bits and covers to look at it, you may as well replace it.

Good advice. It will probably show some sign of wear as it would have gone round a few times
Get it replaced as soon as you can. 105000 is a recommendation not a target.

My question comes from not knowing the monster's past.
I've requested the dealer to replace it for me and he could say he did it but I have no way of checking.
It's all about trust, which I completely lack when it comes to servicing hidden engine parts.

So I believe I finally convinced the dealer to do the cam belt before picking it up.
Does anybody know if there's a way to easily check if it has been done or not?
Something I still don't know is if the 3 belts (cam, pump, alt) are readily visible once engine covers are off.
Thanks!

Edit: question already answered above. Should read my own threads again once in a while...

The only thing I can suggest is to mark the belt with some paint, but you need to take a lot of "stuff" off to get to the cambelt.
Other than that you could ask to watch. Get the deal done and then say you want to watch. You really don't want a cambelt let go. D3 HSE MY05 Auto

Indie. Anyhow, couldn't watch the process and told it's "aready been done", but I'm not taking chances, 7k miles away from suggested target.
Gareth, zarnd, Stu, Martin, huge thanks for the immediate feedback. Hope in time, and with more experience I can help contributing as you do.
Now I need my Disco3.co.uk sticker.
