Re: Removing key from towbar |

After a sensible PM I am allowed to re-post - to be helpful to those who asked.
To release the catch and therefore withdraw the key for safe storage - on the back of the towbar there is a silver pin that protrudes when off the car, tap this pin with a hammer, and it will release the spring as if the towbar is in the rear bumper, you can then remove the key as normal, to use the tow bar you then need to put the key in again and "unlock" it - its obvious when you do it.
See here - http://www.disco3.co.uk/gallery/displayima...amp;pos=29
borrowed from Jamo
THIS IS IN NO WAY THE SAME AS HOW TO REMOVE THE TOWBAR FROM A CAR (WITHOUT USING THE KEY)

Good to see this posted as I agree there is no conflict of interest with regard to allowing people to remove them from the car!
The keys are really vunerable when attached to a heavy lump of forged steel so theres no harm in showing people how to remove the key!

I've always been able to remove the key when the towball is off the car just by turning the key back. Is this not normal?

Not for me, the key will only come out once the towball has been fitted.

I really dont see this as a security issue the locks are so easy to remove anyhow the instructions are in with every new lock that only cost a few quid and do you not think that people that want them wont know how to get them.If your not using it stow it away .

think that this fits here, I have a detachable towhitch that has the lock all damaged to the point where I cant get the key in. The final outcome is that the towhitch can't be taken off and stowed.
Is there a DIY way of drilling out the lock or the like so that it can be replaced?
All help and suggestions welcome.

Gordons,
Just buy a new lock and key set; very easy to fit and the instructions come with the kit.

[.................outcome is that the towhitch can't be taken off .............]
I'm sure there are a few out there who would get it off o' so easy - just park up in a quite corner of your local supermarket and hey presto, before you know it, it's off

You can remove the key without resorting to banging the silver pin with a hammer or similar.
Remove the towbar as normal and then re-insert it slowly into its apperture as if you are going to refit it. Hold the locking wheel in your right hand and as soon as you feel the wheel begin to turn, immediately withdraw the towbar. The locking wheel continues round to the locked (inserted) position and allows you to remove the key and store it safely.
When you go to use it again you just need to insert the key and turn the locking wheel to the unlocked position before fitting it to the Disco. It might take you a couple of goes to realise the optimum release point but once mastered its easy as PI.
