Advice regarding a RAI on a 2010 D4
Morning,
I recently bought my first Landrover, a 2010 HSE D4 which is fantastic.
I was keen to get a RAI but had a few questions, if someone could help me out I would appreciate it.
Regarding fitting I am right in saying the d4 model does not require drilling and does not leave any marks on the car?
Also is it practical/advisable to keep it fitted to the car full time? Does this have any negative effect on MPG/performance at all?
Finally I assume if its the offical LR part it has no effect on the warranty.
Hi John, although I have never fitted one, looking at the instructions you need to drill in to the wing above the air intake and the A pillar/moulding. Yes it will have an small affect on the MPG and you may have an issue with the corrosion warranty if you were to place a claim for the area you have drilled as LR didn't do it to their exacting standards The surest sign that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe is that none of it has tried to contact us yet.

Yep - as Snowy said.
You need to drill two holes in the wing (to fit the rivnuts) and one bigger one in the top of the A-pillar.
The mechanical installation of the actual RAI is the same on both the D3 and D4 (regardless of whether it is the 2.7 or 3.0 diesel engine).
I don't know anyone that doesn't have it fitted full-time. It will affect mpg, but by a very small amount (I didn't notice any difference, but then again I didn't check).
It will make a little more wind noise, but again not that noticeable (especially for me as it is on the passenger side )
If you fit it yourself (very easy to do), then you should be fine regardingt he warranty assuming you have followed the instructions and don't do anything really daft .

John,
Beware the LR RAI is a raised air intake and not a snorkel and therefore not waterproof! The Aussie Safari Snorkel ( in my opinion not as good looking as the LR RAI) is waterproof but has to be installed properly. There is discussion that one of the LR hoses (intercooler I think) in the engine bay may not be.

Sorry Jools, but you are off the mark.
The D4 has a new water-proof hose between the RAI and the air-box.
If you are correct that's really good news and I hope you're right as I much prefer the look of LR one. However my dealer Lance Dixon and Gordon at the Green Oval Experience seminar last week have both said that the LR RAI is not waterproof.. So...??

For the 3.0 ltr D4 the RAI kit provides a replacement hose from the RAI to the air cleaner box. But for the 2.7 ltr D4 they seem to have retained the old D3 kit, and I don't believe the 3 ltr kit will fit the 2.7?
The hosing from the air cleaner to the primary/secondary turbos is different for the 3.0 ltr, so comments on the 2.7's 'leaky' two-stage input piping probably don't apply.

Gordon,
So what you are saying is the 3 ltr the RAI kit comes with a new waterproof pipe from the RAI to the aircleaner and that a pipe further down the line may not be waterproof. With regard to the 2.7 D4 as they have retained the D3 kit you are saying that the pipe from the RAI to aircleaner is not waterproof and that everything further down the line is. Correct?
Bye the way Craig, Andrew and myself really enjoyed your seminar in Melbourne last week. Just waiting for Craig to type out his notes from it so I can start to remember some of the info. Especially interesting was your use of Rock Crawl.
Cheers

Whilst it's true that the RAI for the 3.0 TDV6 comes with a new tube and elbow, they're certainly not waterproof.
In fact, they are much less "waterproof" than the original ones fitted to this engine.
The actual new air pipe from the RAI to the elbow is made of what looks like a paper filter and the elbow is full of drainage holes on the bottom edge.
Here's a photo I took a while ago of the elbow (I didn't get one of the air pipe). The new one is on the left

Doesn't seem changed from the D3 elbow then.

Jools.
For the D3 (and the D4 2.7), the RAI kit is definitely not waterproof, either from the RAI to the air box, or the airbox to the turbo.
For the 3.0 ltr D4, I wouldn't confidently say it's any more waterproof, even though there's a couple of extra pipes (especially after seeing PaulP's photos above!).

I know it looks like something's wrong, but you can clearly see that the right-hand pipe is older. It is what came off the 3.0 TDV6 after a years use and I was there when they removed it.
The left-hand tube was brand new and came out of the same box as the RAI and the longer tube - both parts were sent with the RAI with instructions to replace the existing ones on the 3.0 TDV6 engine.2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE AutoBuckingham Blue 2007 Golf GT DSG

Hi Gordon,
The advice from TLO on this forum is that the D4 pipe is retrofittable to the D3.
