Possible reason for increased engine noise after service

I lifted the plastic engine cover this afternoon to service my MAP sensor (which was really gunked up) and the foam sound insulation underneath the cover just fell off. The moulded foam had gone all powdery and basically was a dirt bin job. My vehicle has done 50,000 kilometres and is a 2006. Its possible that vehicles of this age go in for service and come out minus the sound insulation! Could this be the reason for a number of threads complaining about noisier engines after a service?

Question
