Strange sound, is it the diff? |
|
Looked already at some diff problem posts but don't find more or less the same.
When driving 130km/h or more, a whining sounds appear. This sound comes on cruise control or just accelerate above a speed of 130. When I lift (slightly) throttle it's gone, and comes back again under above conditions.
Sound is not related to temperature or driving distance, it's always there and difficult to trace if it comes from the front or rear.
Anybody advice? Car runs out of warranty in 2 months.

I had a similar whining sound on my 56 plate, was there virtually from new and asked a couple of garages I used what it could be to no avail. Sound went away for a while (I seem to recall), but then I had what was more of a grating sound coming from the rear (was very hard to tell where it came from in the driving seat. Eventually (and unfortunately for me, shortly after the warrenty ran out), dealer informed me I needed a new rear diff. Since replacement, no sound ..... read into it what you will. 11 HSE Santorini Black

philthejono, look at Katana's VIN and my VIN ... looks familiar to yours??? Would you mind putting your VIN
the same style [last 2/3 blanked] in your profile... Anybody with a simular problem can compare VIN's...
Thanks,

UPDATE:
Had front diff replaced under guarantee today, and lever on box to change gear/position [automatic]. The "whine" sounds different now : high-pitched part & grumble [almost like tire noise] are gone... Gone is the
'torque-steer'... The 'transfer box' cannot have been involved. Oil was changed 6 months/ 8000km's ago but is still honey-coloured and doesn't smell burned...
What's left is a whine 'mid-range' more pronounced 'whine' as before. This could be rear diff ???
