Australian pricing out of whack? |
|
I've been looking at a D4 to replace my 5 year old D3. Is it just me, or is the pricing here in Australia way out of whack?
In the US a D4 HSE is about 56k - compared to the similar spec here for around $110k
In the Uk its about 66k plus VAT - but that is very highly specced compared to our HSE.
Yes, I know we have a GST and a Luxury Car Tax, but even with those in there, it beggars belief that the prices are where they are at - roughly double the rest of the world. I also know the Australian dollar can move - but it has been sitting at almost parity with the US for most of this financial year - when are they going to factor that in?
Thoughts? Disco 2 TD5 "Good"
Disco 3 TDV6 "Better"
Disco 4 HSE SDV6 "Best"

It is the same all over the world. In Canada it is $10,000 more for the base spec LR4 than the US. The HSE LUX LR4 in the US is $57,665 and in Canada it is $70,790. $13,000 difference.
I bought a Honda VFR800 motorbike last year. In Canada it was $15,300 and in the US it was $8,300. I went over the border and bought it and then shipped it back in a Budget van.
Canadian $ at the moment is worth more than the US $ and yet I am paying more for it.

It's called gouging , and we're excellent at it . Keep ya money in ya pocket , and give 'em ya finger .
I've got several Mates in importation , and they're rolling in profit from our currency . It's rife these days.
Cast your mind back to when 22% and 32% sales tax became 10% GST : hardly a price went
down, between upped wholesale and retail margins .
......... and what happend to the reduced prices from reductions in import duty from the 'States ?
Looked at a USA Fender , Gibson , PRS , BadCat , Rivera , Harley D , Kubota, JD ,recently ? It's total BS !

You'll need to weld heaps of steel on the D3's front , with those crazy coach and truck
drivers all over the road . They scared the Hell out of me ! You're a brave bloke !

Thanks guys -its not just me then...
Singapore I understand - they're just making it really hard to own a car there, given that they have all roads. I notice it didn't seem to stop people buying ferraris, lambo's, bentleys etc when I was there in October. Cars for the uber rich only...
I think the "old" brands are in for a rude shock in this decade. The koreans have really started to get their together and the chinese will be right behind them. A friend of mine bought a Kia Sorreno and I laughed at him - right up untill I drove it. It's bloody good! The equipment level shames the top spec Disco for about 40% of the price. I'm not saying I'd pick one over a Disco, but it's gotta be a reality check.
I'm just going to put my purchase on hold for 6 months and see what happens. Disco 2 TD5 "Good"

Test drove a Hyundai i45 a few months back and was impressed at the
improved build spec vs Camry . The gearbox was not too clever , but after
years of ZF's , nothing much else impresses me in the transmission game.
Toyota are going to come a cropper in this decade in the face of other
Asian marques. Their interiors are total rubbish , of late . Camry are dreadful.
http://www.caradvice.com.au/68687/hyundai-i45-review/
It too is 8 grand over priced ...........
PS I have to admit to being somewhat disinterested in D4 , but one parked next to
me at Bunnings this morning , so I had a look over it ( 3.0 SE ). I can't see $90K.
They're taking the pi$$ TBH. I'm not paying that.I thought $64 was more than enough !
The difference would buy me a new tractor.......

Just on a footnote, I was trawling the motoring pages of the local press and noticed that Kia sales are up 40 % for the year. That is amazing. Not wanting to sound like a kia fanboy, but I would say that is the year that we saw the tide turn.
I took a Toyota Prado for a spin too. Nice car. Still very Toyota-ish, but it feels strong. Disco 2 TD5 "Good"

Yes - I've been in one lately too... I've never known what it was like to drive about in a toaster/fridge before. Nippon vehicles at the moment seem to be like appliances. No soul or spirit at all.

..... and look at the prices on this ! |
|
http://www.themotorreport.com.au/50954/201...in-january
$76k plus on roads ...... we'll need to wheelbarrow the damn bank notes around to a Dealer
to buy any old 4x4 rubbish at this rate . I thought $1.2m for a house was enough , but these
prices for cheap plastic 4x4 cars has become totally ludicrous .
Time to draw the line and buy an ex-lease 2yr Commodore for 22 grand .... it's transport
, not an investment : I'm over it !

ya know, if they put the 3.0 litre diesel in the tdv6 it wouldn't be such a proble. After all, the 2.7 will be in the ford disco by mid year and you can't tell me its a saving to have two different diesels in your line up.
if they did that i'd buy one. Disco 2 TD5 "Good"

I'm in the market for a replacement D3.
After contacting 2 LR dealers and getting a price for a D4, neither seem really interested in chasing me to make a sale on a $100K+ D4. Go figure Maybe sales are just too good at the moment to bother with the small sale
Well maybe I need to find a dealer interested in my business and that might mean not LR.
