I bumped into an acquaintance of mine this afternoon down at my local garage, he was sat in a brand new silver Discovery 3, I thought he'd bought it but no he was test driving in for the day and he HATED it , he has a Discovery 2 on an 03 plate and says that the new one has lost something of the old, its not rugged, not a proper 4x4, disbelief on my part. Figure that! 2004 Discovery 3 - gone

Thats very odd. I would like to wager that a fair few D3 owners have owned D2's and D1's. They do get in the blood. I've had 3 now.

There are a lot of aspects of the D2 and the earlier ones I had that I miss. I totally agree that some of the original ruggedness has gone - rather like the comparison with the original Range Rover with plastic seats compared to today's luxury vehicle............

Yes Gareth, I have also had a D1 in the past, although got a 4.0 P38 Range Rover when the D1 was written off in an accident. Its good to to be back in a Discovery and the performance of the TDV6 is better than the V8 in the Range Rover
The D3 continues to please with every drive, both off and on tarmac.

To be honest, I think there will be very few individuals who will want to throw upwards of £30k of new car into the mucky stuff and come out with scratches & dents in the same way as if they had earlier, perhaps second - hand versions. both my previous disco's were treated to a good thrashing the day I bought them - but they were both over 3 years old and already had lost their 'newness'.
it'll be interesting to see how many Disco 3's are taking part in off - road events in two or three years time...
Those lucky enough to have a Disco 3 as a 'company vehicle' - not car- will hopefully be throwing them around to the best of their ability
I'll be interested to see the condition of the Disco 3's at the LR experience day - once I get mine that is!
i've had company disco's & defenders in the past, all of them were worked to their limits from new - much to the disgust of those who didn't get one!
Cheers,

The D3's at Honiton LR Experience were immaculate, not a dent in sight and they clean them every day religiously after use. 2004 Discovery 3 - gone

Not for the first six months you won't , mine finally has a very small dent in the passenger nearside door - I felt sick for days and buckets - now I've learnt to live with it I find I'm far less bothered about scratches etc. 2004 Discovery 3 - gone

Certainly that first scratch is the worst, mine came in a car-park , but then I gained a small dent on a green lane in Derbyshire, so small scratches aren't so bad now
