Boot access for dogs
Anyone got advice for getting my 18 month old Labrador into the boot. He is reluctant to jump in and it does seem quite high for him. Should he be able to get in no bother? Have looked at ramps but they seem a real hassle

He might just be wary because it looks like a ledge to jump onto. try draping a blanket from the tailgate to the floor so it looks solid for him to jump onto. If he'll chase a ball or favourite toy throw that in after you've teased him a bit and he should jump in.Kev

Ours could jump in from 6 months old, and she is the smallest lab I've ever seen. She's 2 now and only comes up to my knee. When it came to training her to get in, I made her take a little run up with the lead and then yanked it upwards. Took two goes, on the second she got it and jumped in.
She can jump in it while its in off road height too!
Other thing to try is getting in the boot yourself!2014 D4 XS

I find letting him play for a while with another dog, then encourage the other dog to jump in the boot, your will follow, particularly if food is an added incentive!

When I taught my young Lab to jump in the back, I put it in access mode and used a treat to encourage him. Soon got the hang of it.
More of a problem now is my 12 year old with a dodgy back end. He can no longer jump in. I have to lift him in - all 33KG of him.
Had the same trouble with my lab, but she jumps in fine now. I backed the D3 up to a grass embankment at first and she just about walked in then.

My Border Collie used to be able to jump in after a run up to it with it in 'access mode' but with his age Ive now got to lift him in.

My 9 month old Springer won't go anywhere near the car. He hates em with a passion. I have to pick him up from about half a mile away and carry him to the boot.
Wussiest springer I've ever seen. Lol.Disco 3 TDV6 SE, black, de-badged, blacked out windows, cream leather interior, never seen a dirt track in its life.
My flatcoat doesn't like to approach the rear of the car when the engine is running, but is otherwise OK.

Our Lab isn't a 'jumper' but has no problems getting in the back without lowering it. He loves it!

My Lab Rosie (2½ yrs) loves being in the back of the car but has always been reluctant to just jump in - although I know she can jump to that height with no problems, she just puts her front feet on the tailgate and waits for me to "wheelbarrow" her back legs in (very undignified.)
Anyway, I just tried the trick with draping a blanket over the tailgate and took a short run-up, second time of trying - straight in no problems

Thanks to one and all for the advice. I reckon we'll give the blanket a go and see how we get on.
In fairness, we only have the dealer's demo D4 for the weekend so it's early days for young Sandy the lab but at least we now know what to try come delivery in September.

Most Labs can jump into a Disco without a problem. I have a year old and an eight and a half year old with slightly dodgy rear end (only gonna get worse I fear). At first the old dog wasn't having any of it, but as soon as the young one was old enough to jump in, the old one followed with ease.
It is all in the mind though. Try the blanket ploy, the toy/treat ploy and the get-in-the-back-and-call ploy. With a little persistence and invention, your dog will eventually realise he/she could do it all along thank you very much.
I used to have a big retriever who, again due to hip dysplacia and age couldn't manage. I had to do the back leg thing and eventually the full lift into my Disco2, so I sympathise with those with that problem. Part of the rich pageant of dog owership I guess.
