Auxilliary Battery Overcharging

My deep cycle aux battery appears to be overcharging as illustrated by an acrid smell of hydrogen gas being emitted. Aux battery is about two and a half years old with little regular load. OEM battery appears OK. Am running a traxide system.
Any one have any tips or fixes?
Meanwhile, seems I will have to disconnect it. Whistle [/code] MY07 D3, TDV6S; Bull Bar, Cooper S/T's, Dual Battery, UHF, GPS; 03 D2, 94 D1, both departed & 1950 S1 80" going strong. 06 Astra CDX Coupe.

Mine looks like it may be overcharging. White residue around the filler caps. Checked the electolyte levels and they are ok. Check the levels in yours.

Thanks for the feedback. Have noted the electrolyte is bubbling out of cap seal when motor running.....which is what is stinking the vehicle out. The cap seal is a single piece covering all the cells and I am unable to remove. Voltage of Aux battery with motor off is 10.8 volts.
OEM main battery is 12.8 v and reading 15 v with motor running.
Seems the Aux battery is stuffed, Mad doubt there is a regulator prob..or prob with traxide stuff.

It a a 60aH deep cycle supplied by All Purpose Batteries two and a half years ago. Confusingly, the transparent battery health indicator on the top of battery body is green, indicating battery ok! Unless the electolyte is down the indicator may not show so maybe a cell gone?

Hi Rob,
Based on your voltage reading, I would swear that you have a collapsed cell in your aux battery (10.8V in 5 cells=2.16V per cell, 6 cells at such a voltage would give 12.96V - so 5 cells are almost perfect & one at 0V).

I'd remove the aux battery and carefully hose the battery compartment and everything below it down, otherwise you risk paint being destroyed and rust setting in.

Then when dry fish oil or some other anti-rust just to be sure.
I use fish oil especially under and around batterys and apart from the smell which goes away it keeps the area in top condition. Thumbs Up

Hi Rob, as above, the problem sounds like a dead cell and following the advice given would be the way to go.

As to the voltage when the motor is running. Did you take the voltage reading just after starting motor or is that the voltage you get when driving.

Normally, the D3 voltage will be high after starting but will settle back some 10 to 30 minutes after first starting.

While 15v is too high for constant battery charging and could easily cause damage to a battery, but if the 15v is applied to a cold battery for short periods of time and the voltage settles back below 14.7v then all should be well.

As to your battery failing, have you over discharged the auxiliary battery at any time? 2008 TDV8 RR Lux + 2009 D4 2.7

My pleasure Peter, also try any Lanolin based spray.

The best stuff I have ever come across is made here by Briggs & Stratton and is called PROTECT-IT.

You can get it from lawn mower outlets. 2008 TDV8 RR Lux + 2009 D4 2.7
