To buy warranty or not???

Evening All,

After having a prop shaft fail after three weeks of disco ownership, I'm thinking that it might be worth paying the £600/year we were quoted by the dealer today for extended warranty.

Does anyone have any comments on whether this is a good idea or not? Is it worth the outlay?

2005 D3 with 56k on the clock.

Is there anything that the warranty doesn't cover me for that I should be aware of? Does it cover diffs/box/air suspension etc?

I would have it in a heartbeat after that initial scare but thought I'd gather the valuable opinions of all you forum members first! Thumbs Up

Thanks,

Steve

I paid £463 for a Car Care Plan 5 warranty that does look to cover most things but mine is an 06 one so got the 5 year plan.

I will find out haw good it is this week when it geos in for an aircon problem and a faulty door catch.

After my experience with warrantywise I would say look very very closely at the small print, does it include everything except what is specifically mentioned or does it only cover what is stated, that could leave a large number of grey areas with a car like a D3.

Also does it cover wear and tear, if not then I would just save my money, cross my fingers and find a good specialist. How many things just "break" after 6 years that can't be put down to wear and tear? Thumbs Up

I wouldn't bother as long as you can find a good independent to keep things in good order. I suspect I have been lucky but £600 or thereabouts for a warranty does not seem to me to a wise investment - esp given the hassle people seem to have with what is and what isn't covered.

Thumbs Up

Just started 4th year of no warranty, having had only minor items in the preceding 3 years of warranty (caliper, "clock spring" & load cover latch). Worst problem was rodent-nibbled fuel tank piping, requiring a new tank, but insurance covered that. Low mileage, but tows a horse trailer now and then.

I've had a Warranty Direct warranty for the last 2 years but have only claimed twice - once for a failed alternator plus worn out belt tensioner and the 2nd time for a front hub replacement (wheel bearing shagged). So far, I've paid out more for warranty than they have for claims, especially as there is an excess (isn't there always) plus you pay a percentage towards the cost of the parts that increases with the mileage you have done Sad .

Just had a renewal notification from WD - £800 odd for the next year so I may well take a chance and ditch it Confused
Now an ex-D3 owner after 7 happy years. Miss the car but not the big bills Smile

Reading that I think you should have saved your money! Once you get to four or five years old what aren;t they going to put down to wear and tear?

Wear & tear is the unavoidable achilles heel of all these warranties.

Warranty Direct just forced my dealer down to £60 an hour and 10% off parts price - for a passenger door lock. I expected to have to pay the difference - but the dealer Invoice states WD's prices (I paid, of course, and have to claim back AND there is a £50 excess) so a £165 job cost me £145 and and I'll get £95 - hopefully).

Not sure about next year though. The battle I had last year to get the seized EPB covered was off-putting...

I had a very good experience of warranties, contrary to most peoples experience.....bought my car in Dec'10 with an optional 3 month warranty (£150)...2 months into ownership my front diff went....didn't think there was any way they would pay out,by quoting the infamous "wear and tear" clause....thanks to an excellent Indy (Andy White) it was inspected by the warranty company and covered under "sudden and catastrophic failure"
Still cant quite believe it as I was expecting the usual big fight...........£1000 saved as opposed to £150 paid out

And the question you all want answered...... www.momentumwarranties.co.uk
"Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

Locking rear E-diff
RLD spare wheel protector & sump guard
Extended roof rails
Series 111 mudflaps
Black side tubes,grill and vents

D3 Java 2005 SE manual (sold, sadly, thanks for the memories)
1966 '88 Series 2a....still starts in the morning better than I do...

Recently had my suspension compressor replaced, but this was not covered by the AA 5 star warranty that the car dealer had sold with the car so I had to pay Big Cry
Acording to the AA Warranty guy no air suspension parts are coverd.
Local Indy done the repair ,charged 1hr labour plus parts + the dreaded. Still all fixed now and you can tell the difference in the ride.

Ambrose - when did the dealer sell you the car? Less than six months ago? Forget the warranty, he should have sorted it. He should probably sort it up until 12 months, but you'd have had more of an arm wrestle.

Warranty Direct 6 months into the second year and paid for itselft already (both years) ... can be a bit slow at getting a decision esp if you take it to your local garage (LR or Indie) but so far no problems! Paid up front and cheque lands within 10 working days.

£50 excess and if your car has over 60k miles less 10% of the parts, 70k less 20% of the parts (betterment and all that).

But so far so good! Thumbs Up
