D3 V8 Engine Oil

Hi Guys

I have a D3 V8, what is the correct engine oil to put in for a smooth sounding engine. The LR handbook I got with the car calls for 5W30. Is that necessary as we dont have the extreme weather conditions they have in England?

I am currently running Havoline 15W40 semi synthetic.

How about 10W30 fully synthetic?

Any advice please?

Thanks

Craig

Hi Crocher,

I'm no expert on the oils but if the handbook does not say you need to put in fully synthetic oil, it's only an expensive option if you ask me. Warranty will be void when you don't respect oil change intervals so you will end up refilling with very expensive oil.

Have not checked the handbook Embarassed and infact have not ever checked oil level on my car Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed .

15w40 would be good for SA climates, probably more for the summer time, and then 10w40 for winter. I run 5w40 here in Ohio year round where we have extreme temperatures. Nothing wrong with 5w30 either, it doesn't have as much to do with the climate but with engine tolerances, bearing clearances and small oil passages. Although synthetic isn't required, there is no reason not to use it, it lubricates better and doesn't break down like conventional oil does.

"You gets what you pay for!". Being in SA I believe that changing oil/filter on a more frequent basis is probably more important than quality of oil. Having said that, if, like me, you intend running with the one car for an extended period then the best available is only good enough! That's the reason I use full synthetic Castrol Edge and change it and filter every 5000 klm. I believe this will ward off most normal engine wear problems for a very long time and at the costs involved in this V8 engine repair work, it seems cheap insurance. I agree with the view that 10- as base is OK for SA. I use 10/40 and so far all is tricky-poo. Razz
Regards all,
Bob

Hi All,
I must confess to being bemused at people wanting to compromise on oil specs. Its not like LR arrives at a spec through bloody-mindedness. Its also not that LR determines a spec based on UK conditions alone.

I'm glad that I won't be buying your LR down the track.
