Considering D4 commercial (rear camera, windows, insurance) |
|
Folks, about to ask some stupid questions but have been considering letting wife use G4 D3 and get 110 Utility XS but not sure I can go back to a Def and have a D4 HSE loan car at the moment.
I can't afford a D4 HSE (well, not and feed the family, I have considered it.....) so decided to look at a D4 commercial so I can claim VAT back and get low Benefit in Kind etc.
Just looking at the spec and am struggling understand how my brain works - why do I NEED things on the D4 commercial that I couldn't even get on the Def 110 I was sooo close to buying..?
Anyway, daft question number 1
Can you see the tow hitch with the rear camera when hitching up a trailer/caravan and is the view of any use or do you need the fancy multi camera system with the hitch zoom to be of any use?
Also, anyone know the legal position of removing the plastic panels and getting the glass covered with a film that lets no light through BUT getting the windows to open? The VAT website (http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/vat/sectors/motors/what-is-car.htm#3) says "The rear side windows will have been replaced by opaque panels." - technically totally blacked out glass is opaque.... I could ask them but I don't want to trouble them such that they feel they need to pop round to have a look at things.
Finally (for now) if rear seats are fitted (I am thinking Atlantech cos they look comfier) is the insurance company ok with it? I am with NFU so will ask them direct but wondered what others have found.
BTW, I want a white one like ENT's....

'Morning...
Can't help with the camera issue as it wasn't an option when I had mine but then we have a 'system' when hooking up the horse trailer (goes along the lines of "two inches, stop, Whoa!, f*cking WHOA I said...!" and tend to have something hung off the back most weekends with no ill effect yet...
Personally, I'd pay the money for the 'Luxury Pack' that gets you the sat nav and upgrade radio... the standard one is shocking in its simplicity.
My only options were met paint (doh... why oh why is that an 'option' in this day and age...), tow bar and leather seats.
The Atlantech seats are superb - if you speak to Geoff, tell 'em Rob says so!
Rear windows... they are already heavily smoked when the vehicle leaves the factory. I'll leave the rest to your imagination
Appreciate that Holmfirth is in God's own country, but should you venture South without getting a nosebleed, you are welcome to have a good old look around my Commercial.
PM me if you need anything else! D4 Commercial - 65 Plate, 2016MY

D4 Commercial SDV6 - Baltic Blue (also gone)
D1 300TDi... 2" lift, HD bumpers (both), detachable tow hitch, 9,500lb winch, 235/85/16 muds and plenty of other toys (gone to make way for the next toy...)

The glass on a commercial is the darkest tint. If you remove the bonded plastic panels from the rear passenger doors it does let light into the interior. Just do a risk assesment for being able to see traffic coming as you exit a slip road, you will soon remove these panels.
If the electric window motors are connected you will be able to open the windows as with all other Discoverys.
I know what you mean by not wanting to go back to a Defender, also about having to spec up a D4.
I went for metallic paint, quick clear screen, xenon headlights, towbar, rear diff, sump guard and full sized spare wheel. Great motor, would buy the same again if it needed replaced.
Regards George.

Cheers all for the feedback - very helpful.
My problem re the D4 is finances and my lack of self control. A standard commercial out of the box is pretty well specced compared to a D110 XS but I find myself unable to resist the D4 optional extras.
Will probably be in touch again with more silly questions but for now that is very helpful.
Cheers

Hi, I can see the tow ball with the rear camera on my D4, no problem. This small extra has probably worked towards saving my marriage as the old method (see above) was getting a bit stressful what with the new colour coded bumpers and all
I can get the swan neck towbar right under the tintent hitch first time, every time. The camera is above the number plate so the view is offset but still just fine for hitching up

Cheers Dexter, and that is with the standard rear camera, not the fancy surround system?

Sorry, I meant the (optional) reversing camera only rather than the all singing surround camera system 2012 Defender 110 XS Utility 2.2

That's pretty much where I am as well tbh - the HSE loaner I have has rear camera and given it seems it can be used for hitching up it seems worth the cash.
Cheers

Yup, just the optional single rear camera, cost about £220 I think. You can even have it on whilst towing to keep an eye on the coupling, using the 'secret' button on the touch screen!
More use to me than a heated steering wheel anyway

I've been thinking seriously about trading in my D3 HSE for a D4 commercial.
Has anybody had any experience of a problem with MOT being failed due to fitment of rear seats
Are the Atlantech seats easily removed prior to MOT visit

as long as they have seat belts its fine. You would be better getting the proper D4 seats though, the minibus bench just looks crap imo.
Have you noticed the crazy second hand prices for 2010 commercials - i've seen them on autotrader 7 grand more than a brand new one . Dealers must be on crack.

Thats good to know that about the seat belts, I will make sure they are fitted.
I bet the genuine LR seats are expensive in comparison to aftermarket ones but i suppose it could be worthwhile
searching around some breakers to see whats about, may just get lucky.

there are a pair of the back row seats on the bay at the moment alpaca leather, they are breaking the whole car so nab both rows and all the belts/trim etc.
