How's your battery fairing Character?
If the battery (and/or wiring) is delivering low volts at start-up time, the starter motor runs slower and draws more amps, gets hotter and for longer as it struggles to start the engine.

On one of my Volvos I got through two new starters, an alternator regulator pack and two new batteries before I discovered an issue with the battery positive cable to the starter ( the join from the cable to the battery clamp was the issue). It was fine normally, but under starting load it dropped 2 volts by itself, making the starter run on about 9 volts instead of 11, and so running longer and hotter than it needed to, and dramatically shortening its life. All symptoms the car was exhibiting vanished when the new cable was installed.
Hey, it's a long shot but it's worth checking yes?

"Yeah, but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should."
Transgenic tomato anyone?

I guess the life of the starter is determined by the number of cycles rather than age or mileage so if you do a lot of short journeys it'll be more wear than a few long jouneys. I'm not that up on diesel engines but could it be a problem with the glow plugs ? I know they shouldn't be needed at the current ambient temps but you never know how a faulty plug may affect things. I guess if it is related to the plugs you'll find out in about 10 weeks or so Shocked

Had a 'new' compressor fail that was fitted 30 Dec 2010 and replaced July 2011 by LR service centre, I was told that it was a servicable / exchange part, I ask why they charged me for a 'new' one in Dec when I got a second hand one, still waiting for the answer! Evil or Very Mad
