Air Springs & Dampers - replacing?

Has anyone had to replace the air springs or dampers on a D3 yet?

When getting the new tyres today I noticed one of the rear air springs looked in pretty poor condition with the rubber splitting and folding over itself in places compared (to the other side that was all uniform looking).

I've swapped the rear air springs on a D2 and it was a cheap and simple job but guessing it's more involved on a D3? Is the damper part of the spring or are they sperate units?

Gareth did a nice write-up not long ago when he changed all four spring/damper units on his D3:

Seems to be a fairly straightforward job, just a little bit fiddly...

Hope this helps Thumbs Up

Yes, its heavy work, but reasonably straight forward. However, I would question why you think that the airspring is looking tired?

The actual airspring is inside the alloy case, and you cannot see it easily. What you might be looking at is the rubber dust boot that covers the bottom of the alloy case, and the bottom of the shock absorber. They do sometime fold themselves around a bit, and the big clip that secures it to the alloy case can come off. If this is the case then a long zip tie will re attach it.

I changed the airspring & shock absorber units because a full set came up for sale as complete units. Mine just needed shock absorbers, the airsprings I took off were good as new. It was just easier to change the whole lot.

I've had a GOOD look at doing these. As said before, they're relatively straightforward, particularly if replacing the whole unit. Cost from Nick for new dampers & air springs is around £1,000 exluding fitting of course.
Dampers on their own are about £600 & a bit more fiddly to change, but not overly so.

It may just be the rubber dust boot that has started to deform then, if so then great, I'll leave well alone as the ride is excellent.
