So, out of academic interest only you understand...
If you keep a second ECU with your original set up on, is there no other historic info recorded onto this particular chip that records stuff like milage, last service, distance to next service etc? In other words, nothing to identify that this ECU chip has not been in the car all the time? If there isn't, where is this data held then?
And, thinking it through further, I would have thought that the ECU would have a unique reference that is held against the car build data held by LR.
Curious as I really don't know where they tuck all this stuff.

The ECU does not record anything nor does it keep any information in it other than that to run the vehicle. It does however talk to the other ECUs on the vehicle.
I think you will find that the way the re-map is done is by cloning your ECU and then mapping the new one so that if you ever have the need to go to the dealers you can put your original ECU back on that has all the stickers/decals etc etc on it
Have a look at this for info on what the new 2012MY can do tuned by Pete Bell of BAS;

"OVERSTEER" ------is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car.
"HORSEPOWER" -is how fast you hit the fence.
"TORQUE" ------------is how far you take the fence with you.

Now that Pete is back I have asked him to post a reply but if you know what you are doing probably about 15mins to change the ECU "UNDERSTEER" ---is when you hit the fence with the front of the car.
"OVERSTEER" ------is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car.
"HORSEPOWER" -is how fast you hit the fence.
"TORQUE" ------------is how far you take the fence with you.

Very easy, you will need an 8mm and 10mm socket. Take the battery out and the ECU is mounted on the bulkhead directly in front of you, take off the four nuts and two top cable connectors from thevECU and your done.Club Exped trailer

From what I understand your talking at least 12 months to be able to tune one through the diagnostics ports etc "UNDERSTEER" ---is when you hit the fence with the front of the car.
"OVERSTEER" ------is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car.
"HORSEPOWER" -is how fast you hit the fence.
"TORQUE" ------------is how far you take the fence with you.

It can be done now and i have been able to for arround 8 months but at the moment its not a reliable enough option for you or your car. More work is needed on the tuning protection to make it 100% reliable.

The milage and some other bits i need not mention is stored in the instrument cluster and the gearbox control module.
The unique ECU reference number and info the car needs to be "seen as correct" is cloned allong with the rest of the cars maping info onto a second ecu if this is the remap option chosen.
If a second ecu is not chosen and most dont then the original is tuned and all info references are as they should be anyway.
Its slightly better now for people buying USED D4s as they could have been tuned before they owned it and its still being sold with a dealer warranty So who in warranty can proveto say its the second owner who has actually made tuning to the car if its had previous owners from new ?

So has anybody on here actually had a remap done by Pete on their D4? And if so, where are the improvements? ie is the improvement low down in the rev range, or is it all at the top end?

Hi Pete
Can you explain that a bit more? I was going to try to guess what you mean, but easier to let you explain, rather than me make several guesses - probably all wrong!D4 XS MY12 Galway

Contact Pete Bell at Bell Auto Services(site sponsor), he will give you all the info you need on the D4 remap. He is on holiday at the moment but will be back later on this week. I can recommend it

It is improved from tick over through to the big numbers. Not noticed any difference whatsoever with mpg during normal day to day driving but it will drop if you drive everywhere using the extra performance. Hi Pete

Im not sure what else to say without a lecture on programming protocalls checksums and chip protections which i dont want to get into on a public forum because of compertition and LandRover . Ill say basiclly that at the moment if an OBD programming attempt were to fail badly somehow because of a glitch in any of the above the ecus data may become very hard to reconstruct.
However with a bench reads its 100% of the ecu content, so after a bench read is done we have a 100% back up of it and its much safer for you as the car owner to have a perfect backup. It of course lets us make cloned ecus as well if we so wish
Here is a link to a PDF for the chip in inside the ecu ftp://ftp.efo.ru/pub/infineon/TC179_5Fds_5Fv03.pdf The chips internal rom has on the D4 tuning protection V6 on it, we then instead read and write the chip directly from the pcb in "Via the Back Door" to bypass some of the security protection available to landrover which they cant stop .
Page 35-36 gives you an idea of the OBD protection available to landrover, and mentions "Trojan Horse" software EG tuners software lol.
