MoT 'advisories' !

I got 5 advisories yesterday:

N/S/F lower suspension arm has slight play in a ball joint
O/S/F lower suspension arm has slight play in a ball joint
N/S/F track rod end ball joint has slight play
O/S/F track rod end ball joint has slight play
Play in steering rack

The first four possibly account for the slight 'knock/donk' noise I've been getting, and would I be right in assuming that the play is caused by the suspension bushes needing replacing - or are the track rod ends knacked ?

I definitely don't feel any 'play' in the steering - is this something to be concerned about, and is there something that I can check (when I say 'I'.....I mean my trusty mechanic !)

I've used the MoT station for several years for the 110, they are a LR & Saab specialist so I've no reason to doubt the testers findings..........they even changed the N/S/F sidelight bulb and didnt charge me Very Happy

Any comments or advice ?

Thanks,
Jim

Does the LR specialist you go to actually do the MOT or do they sub-contract it to someone else (look at name on MOT certificate)?

As they are a LR specialist, who you seem to trust, ask their advise as to when they believe it should done (i.e. is it bad enough to need doing now or can it be left until later without any other significant consequences).

The MoT's are done in-house, while-you-wait.

In fairness to the tester, he did say to me that the 'play' was probably easier for him to feel as he'd got the Disco up on a ramp - I didnt watch the test, would they have the wheels hanging free (so the suspension was 'unloaded') ?

Gary,

Was it all the front suspension bushes that you had replaced ?

Its was the Lower Suspension arms that include the bushes and the track rods including ball joints. It normally cheaper to it this way rather than pay to have the bushes removed from the arms and replaced. Plus you get new shiny suspension!

Most D3 need this done at or around 60,000mls Thumbs Up

Hi Jimbo, I experienced similar with a recent kwik fit ( for convienience-mistake) but I fact they failed it for play in front and rear nearside suspension bushes. Took it to local Indy and he agreed the rear needed replaced but said the front was not a fail and had the car re tested. I know I will need to do the front soon ish as its started knocking sometimes but atleast it didn't need done to get through mot.

Has yours seen much action overs it 60k? I know mine has not had much off road but a bit of towing... I suppose theres alot of factors could contribute to the lifetime of the components....

Nothing too serious, had 12k on it when I purchased her, done some towing (some big trailers), and it was my daily drive for work for 3-ish years, carrying a full load of tools and equipment - averaged about 800miles/week then, but since changing jobs I have a 'works van' so SWMBO uses the D3 to get to/from work (4 miles each way !!)

Other than needing a damn good valet after last weekends Scouting event in the Peak District, the D3 is quite tidy (ok, she also needs a new n/s step - the metal trim fell off !), think I need to lavish a bit of TLC on her - as the plan is to hang on to it for a while yet !
