Rip off Britain
Try Rip off Ireland
Back in April ’05, when I bought my Disco 3, an Auto TDv6 SE cost me EUR 60,000.00 which at today’s x-rate works out at Stg £40,331.00.
Bear in mind too that the Irish spec SE didn’t have leather or xenons, like were on the SE’s in the UK at the time. Not sure about the spec’s now though.
So boys things aren’t too bad in the UK believe me !!!

We pay 121% the cost of a new diesel vehicle over 2.5 ltrs in Jamaica...and our salaries are about 1/3 of the equivalent profession in Britain. A base LR3 costs 4.7 million JA$ or 37,903 pounds..and thats with a gov concession..regular folks pay 43,548 pounds for a base..and get this, there are more FFRR (96,774 pounds) there than discos by far....Its costing me less to buy a D3 in Britain and get it shipped home after a year....

You think that is bad - try this |
|
We specced our HSE up on the Danish LR website to the UK Spec and it came out at nearly £145,000.
Thats why we dont see too many D3's in DK.
You can avoid a fair chunk of tax if you use it for business AND put a metal grille behind the 2 fromt seats and take the other 2 rows out, effectively making it a 2 seater. Oh and i nearly forgot........it will then be issued with Yellow index plates.
I/we were thinking about emigrating to DK but this issue puts me off as apart from the fact i couldnt afford to buy the car there, my concience wouldnt let me.

Oh well, if it helps, at least that news makes me feel better Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent.

It's not just Land Rover - Lexus, Volvo, etc. also charge more. Are there any more hidden taxes? (I know that VAT is 17.5%). In the US the price is quoted pretax, but there's no way that accounts for the price difference.
What extras do you get on the UK model? (free chauffeur?)
Someone also mentioned free maintenance - this is little more than an oil change every 7500 miles - something you can get for $25 elsewhere.

Have you ever tried food shopping in the USA? It's way more expensive to buy similar quality to what we take for granted over here. I have to food shop in Miami for food for 24 folks on the ship and I can assure you that I try to avoid buying ANY food in the USA, it is just SO expensive. Panama, Colombia, Mexico, China, Korea and Hong Kong can offer the same produce at far less expense despite it being imported from the USA! And I have $5.75 per man per day to spend on food items so we aren't exactly wealthy foodshopping folks. Even fresh produce is heaps more expensive than in the UK.
And don't envy the American lifestyle too much, many folks work many more weeks in the year than most Europeans - and often in American companies you do not get paid holidays like us. In fact often you only get public holidays.
I have been told the streets of London are paved with gold and everybody who lives and works south of Birmingham is a multimillionaire................
But I know form visiting the south that only the second point is true - the streets of London are paved with hard concrete just like the rest of the UK Now a disillusioned new Land Rover buyer and have jumped ship to something less expensive and more reliable that hugs trees.... now driving a Mini Countryman PHEV as well as my trusty and brilliant 1996 Epsom Green Defender90 Tdi300

You're so right - a loaf of bread costs more that a gallon of petrol/gas! Shows where the priorities are over here...

Prices and cost of living U.S. |
|
Hello list:
Now it's time for my first posting on this message board.
I am one of the fortunate few that was able to purchase a brand new shiny LR3 (I believe you folks say: Discovery) at LOW U.S. prices. I's a very nicely equipped V6 SE. The only things that I'm missing are park-distance control and power folding mirrors (not sure if the power mirrors exist at all).
Relative to the cost-of-living discussion I want to share some first hand experience. I have mainly comparison to Germany (I'm actually a "Kraut") and Italy.
Overall the cost of living in american Metro areas is extremely high. This starts with housing expenses (rent for a house in our area is about 2 to 3 times as high as in Germany, effectively USD 2500 - 3500 for a family of four). This is in part because the local property tax for a house like this is around USD 10000.
Daily expenses for food is also very high. If we use the measure "shopping cart" then an average full cart is EUR 100 in Germany, while in Chicago this is more like USD 200 - 250. If you buy some steaks and wine then the cart can cost you 350 USD.
Kids activities are also extremely expensive, a session in gymnastics class or soccer team, or musical instrument lessons cost 200 to 400 USD, and kids usually do two sessions per year.
Private school: very expensive. Public school: very cheap (because it's paid through property tax $$$)
Vacation: $$$
Restaurants (decent): $$$
In contrast to this some luxury or convenience items are much cheaper here compared to the old world. Cars are one example, computers, stereo equipment, clothes, Also gas (some folds call it: petrol).
Overall, we feel that cost of living is high. You maybe save a few times when buying these luxury items. But then in between daily expenses are a rip-off in many cases.
This is not really Land Rover related, sorry. Overall we are very happy with our LR3, this is the best car we ever owned. Hope it lasts, and before we move back to Europe in 2 years or so we will decide if we "upgrade" to a new model or just take our 2006 with us.
Happy listings,
Kai
