D4 Automatic Transmission Fluid replacement

I am currently up to 50000km in my disco 4 and it's still going well.
I was wondering when the transmission fluid requires replacing?
Upon asking my service centre they said its sealed and never gets replaced. Is this normal and will replacing it prolong it's life or do they expect you to replace your transmission after a certain amount of Km's....??eg 150000 or 200000?

I think D4 3.0 diesel UK service schedule is:-

main gearbox oil change 9 years or 144,000 miles
Transfer box oil change 5 years or 80,000 miles

cheers

Mark.

Thanks MJIbex,

Just wondering if anyone gets it changed earlier?
Surely it would help to maintain the life of the transmission.

oils cheap

I spoke to the engineer in charge of the drive train a while back

he said its sealed for life..I said funny the same gear box data from ZF recommends change at 70K in arduous conditions does dragging a few tonnes around rather than a saloon not count as arduous?

he reply.."I'll look into it."
It is better to have and not need it then need and not have it.

You might consider to follow the same logic as has been done for the D3 auto gearboxes (ZF 6hp26) - to change the fluid at least every 100000km to keep it fresh. Smile

Sounds good. I might even do it at 80000kms.
Probably get someone to do it that can suck the majority of oil out and replace it all at once.
If I try and do it myself I'll have to change 3-4 liters at a time about 4 times which is quite a pain.
I'll just have to make sure the company that does it uses the exact specified oil. Very Happy

I had my D3 done at 100,000km after I could feel very slight shuddering in certain conditions. I traded it in at 138,000km and the gearbox was still very smooth.

I will definitely be installing the steel sump, separate filter and new ZF Lifeguard oil - probably at about 80,000km as well.

Hi Russell,
Not on the automatic gearbox - it is plastic, with the filter integrated into it. So when you need an auto service, you now have the choice. The steel sump with separate filter makes it cheaper for subsequent changes, as you only need replace the filter and not the whole sump/filter assembly. Plus it is stronger.
Cheers,
Rob
