If I read this right Glosboy will / should already have declared he has tinted windows as an extra when doing his insurance so it will already be covered in his premium. I can just imagine the conversation... 'I'd like to tell you that I have tinted windows fitted. Er, yes sir, you already did. I did? Yes. Oh, so I'm covered for tinted windows then? Yes sir. Oh ok, thanks...'.

GlosBoy,

If you are thinking of changing your tints to keep the inside of the car cooler in summer, then the level of darkness is not what you need to be looking at, but the material of the tint itself.

I imported my old D2, which had tints, but the car was defected because they were too dark, so I had to remove them. The car temp inside increased so I headed over to a local tint shop, who have me a wide choice based on heat reduction or privacy. The highest heat reduction tints were a lot lighter than the others.

When fitted the car was a lot cooler.

From an insurance point of view I thought tints made it harder for windows to be broken and the car got into.

Mind you I cannot remember the UK having that much sun 8)

There are many different types of window film, some tint, some are for security, some for heat reduction and some for multiple uses. Make sure you know exactly what you are getting.

You must notify your insurer.

Make sure you use a reputable supplier who can assess the factory tint since you will already have some as the D3 will have Optikool windows on it.

If you don't meet the requirements for windscreens and front windows you run the risk of getting 3 points and £60 fine for having a vehicle in a Dangerous Condition. Insurers will nail you for this as they will just see the DC code on your licence and assume you can't be bothered to maintain your car. If you are lucky plod may just get you to rip off the tint at the roadside. Tints are an easy ticket, and insurers will hit your premium hard for DC points as they assume you are going to cause them to pay out due to poor maintenace/don't care attitude. And its a great get out of paying for them if you have a prang!

Thanks

I have already checked with my current insurance company and as long as its only the back end and an approved fitted with the correct materials my insurance is OK.

I am about to change them in early April so will ensure I am good on the new one as well.

Cool. You can do what you like after the B Pillar but in front lots of people over-tint.
