****"!!!$ Cambelts.

Just done my cambelt. I had not done one before or seen one done but I read up on the internet and bought the locking tools. Happy that I have done it but I hope I don't have to do one again for a while. Involved a trip in a taxi to a tool shop to buy some star sockets mid dismantle, the dismantling of a branch lopper and use of one arm to undo the viscous coupling, (don't ask!!!), undoing a waterpump bolt instead of a timing belt casing bolt and then dropping it!!!! and no it didn't hit the ground! After half an hour I finally found it. Then much scratching of the head for a good while as all the instructions I had stated that the hole in the tensioner plate should be lined up with the groove...... It is not a groove it is a bump!!!!!!, or a raised mark but not a groove!!!!!! There is a groove but that is another half way round on the tensioner travel which is impossible to get to by turning it with an allen key.
That was the bad.......the good is the fantastic sense of relief/satisfaction when it starts and runs Very Happy, gets the heart rate going just before you turn the key that is for sure !
Not a nice job but recommend you try it if you feel confident enough. Just check, recheck, and check again before you are satisfied with the timing setup Smile Think of the money you could save:)))

No, I've got it but to be honest I had had enough by the end so that can wait for another day. At least the
important one is done. I feel like I have been beaten up at the moment. Talk about unfit!!

Mines booked in next week at an Indi to be done Thumbs Up

I didn't feel brave enough - I've done loads of 4 pot belts, but didn't fancy a Vee.

Rear belt was done when the HP pump was changed, so at least that cost isn't needed Thumbs Up

I did mine last weekend after reading the various posts. Thank god I had the star socket for the crank pulley Very Happy My viscous fan came off reasonably easily as did most of the other bits. I found it reasonably straight forward, I turned some Cam locking pins up on the lathe which worked fine but didnt bother locking the crankshaft. I marked it up with some metal marker as soon as I had the cams locked in place, then belt and tensioner taken off.

The most time taken was trying to work out the bloody ridiculous belt tensioner, again I was trying to follow the instructions by lining the 'window' with the notch, and then decided it meant the bump- the raised mark Shocked Shocked

Also lost a pulley bolt down in the engine bay what a job to retrieve it

All in all quite an enjoyable job, took me and a pal all day.
The feeling of dread at turning the key for the first time soon turned to joy. I have to say that the car is a lot more responsive since the cambelt change Confused
I also changed the idler pulleys and serpentine belt as well.
Big saving and sense of achievement Thumbs Up

Does't anybody remove the starter and lock up the flywheel ? I must aadmit I've done lots of cam belt changes on other cars that should of had the flywheel locked but have marked the crank instead.
Also how many people have change the water pump at the same time ?

I'm doing mine sometime in April. I'm definately removing the starter and locking the fly wheel, it might be a load more work, but guarrantees the timing is correct, and not a few degrees out Thumbs Up .
And yes i will be changing the water pump aswell. Very Happy Very Happy
