Best size tyres for 20s
I have recently fitted 20"RRS wheels to my d3 with the intention of fitting 275/45/20 cooper ltzs ASAP but noticed that some are running different size tyres (e.g 285/50/20) and wondered what experiences people have had with 20" sizes. pics would also be appreciated

In theory, or ideally, so as to not upset gearing/drivetarin loads/etc/etc, you should try and stick with a tyre size thats within 2.5% of a standard tyre. So if we take a 255/55x19 as a standard D3 tyre size, then the closest 20 to this is fractionally smaller at 275/45x20. I run 265/50x20's, which are fractiobnlly bigger. This might help:
One issue is that you cant get all these sizes in the right weight rating - typically, 255/50x20's and 275/45x20s are only rated up to 110, whereas ideally you want 111 or above for the D3.
also, some of the bigger sizes only fit pre 07 D3's as later model have a different steering stop on the chassis, which the bigger tyres foul. I ran 295/45x20's on my old D3 for a while - looked the muts nuts, but it tramlined like mad due to the wider tread on the road.
hope this helps

Thanks for the info Al. I have fitted a set of 275/45/20 general grabbers today and they look so much better than the 275/40/20 continentals that were fitted. Also they are nearer to the correct weight rating now( contis were only 106!). I am tempted to go for 285/50/20 Ltzs as these would be an inch and a half bigger still according to your post Previous Discos

Think i will go for 285/50 next. Been out tonite and the ride is massively better now than on the 275/40 that were on,also steering feel more planted and less wandery. so hopefully bigger still will improve it even more?

Reckon on a post 07 D3 they will rub due to the chassis intrusion.
The 285's fitted my old D3 fine but fouled on three areas on my D4, the chassis being the main one.
So reluctantly I'm now down to 275's - it was either that or getting the grinder out, but didn't feel comfortable in doing that to a brand new D4
Btw, it'll be easier finding some rocking horse sh!t than 285 ltz's...... always on the road less travelled 🚧

At a whopping £210 per tyre
Rocking horse sh!t is cheaper than that. ...... always on the road less travelled 🚧

I have the standard 20" wheels on a 2012 D4 currently fitted with 255/50 20 tyres.
If I want to swap for 275/45 20 tyres, would these fit OK on the standard 20" wheels without fouling?

Don't really think you'll have a problem, I'm running 275/45 LTZ's on mine.
But it all depends on the offset of the specific wheel.
Mine are wider and not OEM
But if it did rub, you'll just need a thin slip-over spacer.
edited to add: overall Radius is slightly less with the 275/45 LTZ, so no problem there.
So key will be the extra width.
Effectively you're best to check 'lock to lock' on your current set up by slipping in a 10mm thick piece of wood between tyre and closest potentially fouling object, which will most likely be the chassis intrussion at the rear of the front wheelwell, but also check the top of the upright....... always on the road less travelled 🚧

Thanks for that!
so what wheels do you have on your disco? I've looked on your gallery and they look great!
Are they genuine Landrover Stormers or are they aftermarket?

They're aftermarket ... but good ones, been running them for around 6 years.
If you do go 'aftermarket' there are two key points to look out for:
1] not cheap Chinese copies.
2] correct weight rating....... always on the road less travelled 🚧

I,m running Cooper Zeon LTZ 285/50/20 on the stormers at the moment with a 6mm spacer behind the wheels.
These have been fantastic and look massive but great..
I,m now after new tyres and wondered are there any pros going for 275/45/20 instead?
These are a bit cheaper and easier to get hold of but will they not llok as good?
Will they make the ride, acceleration better? Better mpg?
Cant decide to go for what was on or drop to the 275's?
