My TDV6 disco has started surging. The tacho goes up and down by about 200 rpm when cruising and there seems to be a loss of power and increased fuel consumption. Starts fine and there is no smoke knocks or rattles. No warning lights, all very strange! Any ideas?

Transmission oil flush, otherwise known as a 'double flush' should cure it. However, check obvious things like the rubber pipes either side of the intercooler, might not be split, but could be restricted internally.

Torque converter? A common mistake made when trying to come up with a totally foolproof design is to completely underestimate the innate ingenuity of fools.

So..with transmission flush in mind I dared ask the local independant what oil he uses. He scratched his head when I suggested MillerMatic ATF DM and suggested it wasn't the right thing. I contacted Miller who says that it is fine for my Disco. I was then advised by a friend who is a former Landy independant that only the Shell M1375.4 will do.
So what is the current wisdom regarding a suitable ATF bearing in mind the difficulties in getting the Shell product? I note that several members have changed their oils so someone must have a heads up on an alternative!

How many miles has D3 done. Anywhere approaching 90k and it may need the transmission fluid changed. But you may also find other symptoms such as a sense of miss firing under load at 30-40 mph. That would add more weight to the transmission fluid issue IMHO. Double flush is one option, but so is Mega-flush, do a search on here for details. Worked for me. 2005, TDV6 S, Auto, 190k miles, owned from new, V8 Brake Upgrade, Nancom Evo, RLD protector, BAS EGR blanking & Remap, separate ATF cooler, changing all the fluids ahead of time.

I have just received an email from Smith & Allan regarding the Shell M1375.4 ATF for my gearbox. Sadly it is no longer available Is that not made any more or just not available for you Landy types any more I wonder? Grr. Looking increasingly like Millermatic ATF DM is the only available option then

Barn1e. My Disco has now done 120k, a lot of it long haul towing. Mostly long distance, my average daily commute is a 160 mile round trip. The last diagnostic check showed no engine problems and it is getting checked again next week whilst in dock for a couple of non related maintenance tasks. The surging was occuring before the last diagnostic check so the garage guy is also intrigued as to the cause.

I had no engine fault warnings that I am aware of whilst I had the misfiring sensation that was cured by he megaflush. But now I have a BAS fault reader I will have a different perspective on faults 2005, TDV6 S, Auto, 190k miles, owned from new, V8 Brake Upgrade, Nancom Evo, RLD protector, BAS EGR blanking & Remap, separate ATF cooler, changing all the fluids ahead of time.

Use ZF Lifeguard 6 or 8 instead. It is a ZF gearbox afterall, also much cheaper. 8)

Disco 3 went in for maintenance and new cam belts. A quick fault code check found nothing untoward again. They were still not keen on the gearbox flush proposal so I decided to do a gearbox oil change myself as per Filo's excellent thread. In the end I got some Ravenol online from Ribble Valley 4x4 which arrived in under 24hrs which is absolutelly first rate service.
I got less than 4 litres out via the oil cooler hose and another litre and a half from the pan drain plug. Yuk! very black and smelly. The refill was dead easy and I was back on the road within an hour. After a fifteen mile test run I repeated the Filo procedure and got five litres out via the cooler hose. Still dirty but far cleaner than before. Again an easy refill.
Th D3 is now judder free amd is not surging or hestitant. The taco is rock steady. The transmission noise seems a little louder than before but perhaps I'm super sensitive at the moment. I have a 1000 mile week ahead all dragging 2.5 tons so we will see how things pan out.
Thanks for everyones help and guidance. much appreciated!
