I have a problem with the shelf above the glove box turning white! It doesn't matter what I clean it with (from simple water to any number of trim cleaners/restorers), after a week or so it starts to go grey/white again. My brother-in-law is "non-metalic materials" manager at a large Company who build submarines, (so knows his stuff) and says it's the plasticides coming out of the plastic and is faulty.
I have called around at my "friendly" Stealers this morning, and expect them and LR to be their usual difficult selves and suggest that something has been put on it. Strange when nothing else shows the same signs. The warranty claim manager rubbed her finger across the shelf and the it turned black, but as we watched it, it started going grey again.
Has anyone else had any issues? Or if they reject the claim, what sort of job is it to replace?

That's what I'm trying for Bodsy, but it was the attitude of the Stealer that didn't give me much hope. Comments like, "It's taken two and a half years to do it?" (Then I pointed out that I'd only had the car since March and it's been like it in the time I've had it), followed by "Well whoever had it before must have put something on it", and "I've never seen one like that before". It's as if they're forking out of their own pocket.

Find another dealer, would they say the same if your engine had gone bang?

As you say there is no proof the fault was there when you bought it (and if it was then the dealer shouldn't have sold you the car without putting it right first) then the problem has arisen since March and as you know you haven't used anything on it to cause the problem then perhaps it must be a manufacturing fault.
If the dealer/Landrover can prove the fault was there before you purchased the car then you could suggest handing the car back for a full refund as THEY have proved it faulty.
Take care that "you bought it in that condition" doesn't become an issue in that it the selling price was influenced by condition.
Last of all - don't give up

Private purchase I'm afraid, but I'll stick with it.

Thanks anyway. I did see it when I first looked at the car, but just thought it needed a good wipe. I continued to think that something was on it until my brother in law suggested otherwise.

Hi Nigel,
Definately nothing has been on it other than wet cloth or cockpit cleaner. I had noticed the slight colour change - it had not worried me, has it got lighter? I have not seen it on others I have to confess. But then most of the cars I see have loads of trim black and other such things on.

It might be better not to mention to the dealers "It doesn't matter what I clean it with (from simple water to any number of trim cleaners/restorers)" as it defeats the claim that there has been nothing on it! A vaccine does not stop you catching a virus, or passing it on, or getting ill from it, really ill. It does reduce the likelyhood of you dying when really, really ill. Hi Mark,
Thank you for confirming that. I spoke to my brother-in-law again this afternoon, and he says it's nothing to do with what's been put on it or not, it's just poor plastic. Cleaning it only masks the problem, and other than replacing it, there's nothing else that will cure it.
I did mention that I'd bought it from a Dealership employee, and her response was "why would they buy one, they have a car from the Dealership". You can see what I'm up against.
Other than that, absolutely loving it! Drove to Inverness to take a two man canoe and a loaded trailer the other weekend. 935 mile round trip, and could have kept going (460 miles via Warrington on the way back). Off to Carlisle on Thursday, and probably the South of France with the caravan on behalf of PC magazine in September.

It seems that some Warranty Manager at a Stealership in North Derbyshire and some oik at LR are now experts in plastics (the oik basing things on a photograph) know better that an expert who is involved in building submarines, as they've rejected the warranty claim on the grounds that something has been used on it!
I feel a letter to LR Customer Services coming on (if I knew where to send it!).
