Disc Rotors

Disc Brake Rotors:
I have a 2009 Disco 3 with just 60,000km and only now fitting my first set of brake pads all round. I was astounded when the Dealer tells me I need 4 new Rotors. This car spends 70% of its time on the expressway, obviously at 60k and never replaced dosc pads I am light on the brakes, so why are the disc rotors wearing.
Any others with experience of this problem.
Rob

Might just be me but I think 60000 kms before replacing brake discs isnt too bad. I know you say that you are light on the brakes but the car does weigh the best part of 3 tonnes so you might be but the car won't be. Just MHO of course Thumbs Up

I'd disagree less than 40K miles is nothing
I drive like Miss Daisy, mostly motorway and I dont recall replacing disks at all on my D3 and I sold her with 97K on the clock
Pads havent been binding have they?
What wear are you getting on tyres?

Do you trust your dealer? I have seen perfectly good disks being knocked off cars with a 4lb hammer ('fitter' having forgotten to take out the retaining screw)
That was right before I decided that I had changed my mind about getting tyres, I went elsewhere.

That said, sometimes light braking can be as bad for disks, if you don't use your brakes here your disks will grow rusrty in no time., Mileage being less important than age in some cases

I wouldn't class that as unusual.

Fronts, new are 30mm thick. min wear limit is 27mm.
rears new 20mm, min limit 17mm.
which if you think about it is 1.5mm per side of the disc.
Corrosion plays a part too, especially on the rears.

Many seem to fit pads on worn discs & get away with it, but, it's better to have correctly functioning brakes.

Regards
Steve

Stick a couple of xxxx beer mats behind the pads to take up the extra wear on the discs and you should get 100k easily. Rolling with laughter
