China 2011 Discovery 4 3.0 SDV6 HSE Auto Santorini BlackDiscovery 4
yunan china roadtrip

so arrived back from the seychelles (well recommended) at 8:00 in the evening collected by driver to go home shower, grap pre-prepared suitcase head off on a 3000km round trip.

we changed our holiday time so we could return for our friends wedding held in a mining town about 800km south of home. (you may have read the road trip to the yingyang origin mountain.) anyhoo..big affair 20 RR cars bought for the wedding, 10,000 guests. we were collected about 1 hour out from the place by one of their bodyguards who took us through a militarized zone (aka ..short cut)
you know your not welcome when the turret rotates to point at you...time to go

arriving at out hotel (all the towns hotels had been booked and paid for for all guests.) this hotel they bought and refurbished for close friends to stay in

this is the view from our room

this was the entrance to where one of the wedding events took place..the sign reads no japanese cars allowed..anti-japanese is not disuaded by govt.(election year distraction tactic)

after hangin out for the night the next day the wedding continued with a celebrity charity gala (they built a hope school as part of the wedding deal) but we had other plans....off again along this gorge

came across an old bridge like something from indiana jones...so I ran across it

then climbed higher

and higher

never put your head out the sunroof

other side of mountain

to our next stop ..this town

looks quaint from above

we rented a courtyard for the night
this is the outside (note both reflectors still on car.)

inside..no need to rough it..just suitable for the four of us

anti-japanese feeling running strong here too. these are students (with police escort Rolling Eyes ) rallying up support

also this shop offers discount if you say one of the following
1) daoyu islands are chinese 10% off
2) if you're japanese and say above 20%
3) china owns japan 20%

actually very nice bread...and cheap after discount Whistle

then we set off again this time a bit more remote so much so that this is the motorway...
about an hour on this road

but the "smooth" highway soon ended and road conditions deteriated

arrived..real road at last

thought about a haircut

but ate some rice noodles instead

this had catastrophic toilet results a few hours later Embarassed

locals love this truck two stroke diesel sounds like an old dump truck.

using tin bong with police next to him

sunset from our room

no need to rough it here either

stopped for fuel and ...wait a minute...where's that reflector gone? chewing gum must have dried out that was holding it on. lost on rough roads somewhere...

some other random pics in roadtrip gallery

overall 10L/100km not bad

and apart from reflector twanging off somewhere (there was a lot of tail dragin on "motorway" areas)

and the sat nav switched to Korean one morning (luckily wife knows a little and switched it back)
and rays sump guard has been well and truly bashed by all manner of objects without it I suspect a wee trip to the dealers would be following this trip.

can't post names of places as some are a no go for non chinese

in total 3500ish kms about 30% on unsurfaced roads

fab!!!

we just bough another place on a tropical island to the south of China so off again next month 5000kms to take some furniture and bits and bobs but mostly highway....roll on Very Happy

Nice report from your roadtrip Thumbs Up

Wish I had the time to look at more of China when I was there last time. We mostly saw Shanghai and the surrounding area.

side car

actually sidecar is original ural post ww2
they had some new ones for sale on the scotswood road a few years back. quite near you.

and Ray yes many places are restricted not only by govt but also by gangsters. (Sometimes the same people) but we have very high contacts on both sides and often just need to pass our reg number to the right person to allow safe passage.

also had car washed and heavy score marks up to just above front fog lights and at the back upto where reflector used to be..

would have surely ripped of front "wing/bib"spoiler things had not removed for sump guard fitment. ..but could have done with the sump guard extending to basically cover everything south of headlights... Laughing

but i didnt buy it to polish it.... Thumbs Up

I think you are confusing Scotswood Road with Westgate Road.
