BP Ultimate - UNLEADED! AAARGH!
Tired and hungry after a long day which included a drive down to Yeovil, I filled up late last night at a motorway services at the BP pump which said 'Ultimate'. 10 miles up the road the warning messages "transmission failure - limited gears available", "HDC not available", "Park brake failure" and finally "suspension failure - access height selected", or similar, all came up within a few seconds, combined with a sudden loss of power.
Puzzled, I rang LR assist who sent out a breakdown truck. Then the thought occurred to me that it seemd too much coincidence that the breakdown happened so soon after refuelling so I suspected contaminated fuel, or worse, no, can't be, the wrong fuel! I could never do that - I'm a bloke!
So I checked the fuel receipt. No, no, no, it said: "Ultimate Unl.". Oh ! So angry with myself. So stupid.
So, my question is this, what damage will have been caused and how much will it cost to put right (it's obviously not covered under warranty!). I know that no-one else on this forum will ever have done anything so stupid, so no-one will be able to speak from experience, but maybe you know someone who has?
My vehicle is a new D3 TDV6 HSE auto with 2000 miles on the clock.

Vehicle has been driven until it stops:
1 . Referring to the relevant section in the workshop manual, drain the fuel tank.
2 . Remove the fuel tank assembly.
3 . Remove pump/sender module and invert to drain excess fuel.
4 . Remove all traces of residual fuel within the tank using clean absorbent cloth/paper.
5 . Clean and flush all low pressure pipes.
6 . Renew the fuel filter.
7 . Renew the high pressure fuel pump.
8 . Renew all high pressure fuel pipes.
9 . Renew the diverter pipe and both fuel rails.
10 . Renew all six fuel injectors
11 . Reassemble pump/sender module to fuel tank and install to vehicle
12 . The tank must be filled with clean diesel fuel
13 . Road test vehicle for at least ten miles, checking for normal engine operation and no stored diagnostic trouble codes are logged.
14 . Return vehicle to customer

Ouch.......!
I think I read that the engine needs a stripdown because of the excessive heat the petrol will have generated, plus the draining the oil for contamination and the fuel tank/pipe.
Those 2,000 miles you've done so far.... I'd guess you'll be paying £1 for each mile you've driven. But someone with real knowledge instead of hearsay (not the band) wil be along soon.
Perhaps you should be offering to get it sorted at a nicer than average price for the poor man instead.
Commiserations Noizeman. I've seen this done many times when I had a couple of filling stations businesses. Fortunately (for my customers) I had a reasonable knowledge of cars and if a Disco came in for petrol I always made a point of asking how they found the V8.
I reckon Bodsy isn't far off the mark in terms of cost.....
Just a thought though (and I don't want to raise your hopes here)....... It would be worth making a claim to BP for the poor differentiation of their 'Ultimate' branding. You wouldn't be the first to do this - and I beleive you wouldn't be the first to win the claim either

i can't see why they don't start making the pump nozzles different shapes.
i know the diesel one is bigger than the petrol but as you can still put the wrong fuel in the diesel it only solves half the problem.
if there were square, triangular and round nozzels that were sized so that they couldn't fit into to each other this would solve the problem would it not.
i just came up with that whilst playing with toys, anyway it's nap time now.I'm Powered by........Diesel

While I accept 100% responsibility for this, and the fuel filler cap does clearly say "DIESEL" in bold letters, it does beg the question as to why BP choose to give the same name to their top branded petrol AND diesel fuels.
With my previous cars (all petrol), my preference was for Shell petrol and I would just go to the pump marked 'Optimax' or 'V-power' in the safe knowledge that this was definitely NOT diesel. But this is one mistake I will definitely NOT repeat, believe me!
The Disco is with the dealer awaiting a diagnosis.

The bill for mine was over £6,500. Thankfully for me Zurich insurance picked up the tab and my warranty remians intact. The car was off the road for 7 weeks though. Fuji White, Auto with Surround Camera

Zurich never quibbled, I guess it was because they regarded it accidental damage.
As a footnote I got nowhere with BP. They refused to take any responsibility and said that I was an isolated incident.Fuji White, Auto with Surround Camera
