Did this trip 10 years ago in a Porsche 911.
Wonderful scenery.

Hairy Dan,
then you have to drive at night, even city driver Norwegians take it slow, plus all the tourist's use along time to get down or up, plus there is many busses and camper it takes the fun out of it.
MR CnW told me she would drive up after we took a day trip to Andalsnes from Valldal (BTW they have the worlds best strawberries in Valldal) after she saw me about to blow a gasket on the way down with all the numpty driving.
A similar road which is now closed to the public is Stålheimskleiva near Gudvangen where the Norwegian nationals where held some years ago.
The road is only open for buses now, which is a good idea, and is one way driven.

Further north I would look at the Ilsand of Senja.
And if the ferry is running take the ferry from Botnhamm to Brennsholmen and then to Tromsø.
We did the opposite way last from Tromsø to Harstad we found some great beaches there.
I "borrowed" this from Google maps to give you an idea, the water was cold, but the kids loved it.

If you deceide to deviate that way, then make sure you are early for the ferry, its a small, expensive ferry, it fills up quickly and is popular.
