Fuel Waxing or Glowplugs??
Cold weather = not starting
Changed battery (£136.50) and much better turning over. But then didn't start yesterday.
AA man (very nice man ) thought possible glowplug issue.
Car started first time this morning though.....so fitter at excellent local indi thinking fuel waxing as water filter quite exposed apparently.
Dont want to do the glowplugs as they like to break!! Changing fuel filter anyway (just in case).
Anyone else had such experience......also, given exposed natureof filter, anyone got a mod to insulate filter?

should be no need to insulate the filter plenty of members on here from colder climates with no starting issues with temps -30 and below
glow plugs are the most likely culpret and they can be tested for current draw and they dont always snap mate of mine has had good sucess removing glowplugs by heating them with a gas soldering ironClub original turbo

...my thoughts entirely. One of the reasons for having a Disco is reassurance you can handle extremes of temperature and environment.
Interesting/frustrating update......Carprotect (with whom I have warantee/insurance) have declined the claim to replace the glowplugs on the premise that they are a 'servicable item'. My indi man says he hates these companies as they always try to wriggle out of claims

Or you need a better quality of warranty, the one I'm with (WD) specifically cover glow plugs and I know of peeps here & elsewhere that have had them changed c/o WD.

I don't understand why they don't start, mine need replacing and will have to get them done but until then it's just puzzling me why it will start at 0 degrees without any hassle but as soon as it has a minus figure on the dash it just refuses. Surely one degree can't physically change it. Diesel is diesel, it's as if there is something on the car telling it not to start because its in the minus figures.
Take a look at my posting 'Cold Starting Problem - this seems very common ' Ive had this for 2 years or more and just as I am trying something it gets bl**dy mild again (well above 0degrees anyway). but as you will see from the above and an earlier post I have tried a lot of solutions. However, I think the guys on this one may have it sorted as it would explain why 1 deg or -1 deg makes such a difference i.e. they reckon it is the temp sensor.
I had issue again this morning even after givin 3 glow plug warming periods.
Car is in for EPB on Thursday I will see if they can sort it then and advise.

If you can get at the plugs you can test them without removing them for their resistance.
If they have gone I would recommend replacing them with Bosch duraterm glowplugs (sp?) as they are rated as the best ones for use with BioD/SVO/WVO and if they rate well for them they will be even better on just normal Dino diesel
PS the fuel cooler won't do anything to the fuel as its on the return to the tank as the fuel can get scalding hot in warmer climes from the compression it endures in the HP pump and CR before injection or return to the tank FFRR Owner, very nearly became a D3 owner

Well, had fuel filter replaced as recommended. My chap was honest and said that after removing the old one there didn't appear to be alot wrong with it (£112.80)....at least now I have a new, original filter
Car didn't start following day (despite 3 glowplug cycles). So went to another local indi with more LR knowledge. They had it for a couple of days during which time it started first time every time!!! They did a diagnostics check and found absuloutely nothing (saying that they would have detected a Glowplug issue). Didn't charge me...which I though was very decent
Car has now started every time (Im glowing twice mind you) since then.
Obviosly delighted it doesnt seem to be the glowplugs....equally, now nervous every morning in case the so-and-so decides not to start!!D3 HSE 06 with all the bells and whistles
New engine at 80k!

Ideally you could do with a faultmate, autologic or SDD to see whats happening with the live data when it doesnt start.FFRR Owner, very nearly became a D3 owner

with my disco im now thinking its down to some sort of fueling issue, over the past week it has been strugling to start in cold conditions (-1/-2/-3) sometimes about 5 mins to start. in one instance i had to wait until midday to start it once the weather had warmed up a little.
This morning (-4) it wasnt starting and i started blipping the throttle and it tried to fire up. give it another go with a blip and hey presto it fired up. The blip seemed to do the trick.
Going to have to wait until tomorrow morning now to see if the blipping aids starting again.
Could it be some sort of fuel temp sensor.

Did you mention TSB LA303-004/2006?
It's about difficult starting in cold conditions and involves re configuring the engine control module.

did you guys get it sorted/has everything been alright since the fuel filter was changed?
similar to me today, not be faultcoded yet but going on yellow taxi tomorrow so would appreciate some ideas.
Noticed our glowplug light took 12-13 seconds to go out, but still would not fire up
