If one buys new hardware the operating system is normally bundled in. Why would one want to upgrade to Windows 8 on existing hardware. I believe that the "enhancements" offered by Windows 8 really relate to touch screens, and that it is really a "reskin" of Windows 7.
I for one wouldn't install it if it were a free upgrade.
Certainly before doing anything read this from PCWorld :-

Win 8 works *very* well on what would normally be considered out dated hardware when it comes to upgrades in the traditional sense.
I run a 5 year old desktop with 8gb ram and W8 boots in about 30-45 seconds from cold. (try that on a good XP machine that had Vista loaded )
As for upgrading from a recently bought W7 box to W8.... well 'tis up to you, but as you and others have siad... there's not much in it.
W7 was what Vista *should* have been, it works well and runs on older hardware reasonably (I have a Jan 2008 vintage Dell D430 Core 2 Duo as my day-to-day lappy with W7 - it is very usable). W8 is, IMHO going to be a turkey like Vista, not due to performance but due to the interface.

It's a bit clumsy for finding things that you would have previously just found in settings like the control panel for example but once you have customised the panels to your own liking it's not too bad. Overall, I have to agree with NJSS that it's far more suited to touch screen. I personally run it on the old style desktop rather than having to scroll the screen all the time 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

I've taken the upgrade offer on my Win7 laptop.
It is true Windows 8 is geared towards a touch screen environment and some parts of it can be downright annoying to use with a mouse. Internet Explorer 10 is the perfect example. Beautiful on a tablet, sucks with a normal PC and mouse. However, the exprience can be improved dramatically once you get the hang of certain very poorly documented keyboard shortcuts. And if all else fails, you can still use your normal desktop browser (Firefox, Chrome etc) if you can't bear with it.
At the end of the day, if you don't have a touch screen there isn't much reason to upgrade. My main reason for upgrading was to keep up with the technology and explore possibilities for development (I'm in the software development field). The fact that it was dirt cheap helped.Dennis

I have a large widescreen TOUCH Sony Vaio desktop
I was only alerting people to the fact today is the last day, as with all Windows upgrades there is the good and bad, 8 has been out for a while now, we are all adults capable of googling, I just thought that even if one person made a saving it could be worth it to them
We have a Mac as well as it performs perfectly with all our Apple stuff, plus it is far better on the media type of stuff like video editing.
By the way, I could count on one hand the amount of times I have used the touch facility on the Vaio PC, it just not seem natural, mainly use iPads.
There is more to 8 than you think plus I found the free media offer which would be useful to some, from tomorrow it is all big bucks, hopefully someone has benefited who wanted it

Please, if anyone is doing this check with your hardware manufacturer for compatibility, most have a site that you enter your model number in and it tells you firstly if it IS compatible and secondly if they will support it e.g. Assist with any software if required. Windows 8 will do a check of your system and alert you to any issues, in some cases it will give a link to software updates to accommodate windows 8, it will also tell you what will not and will work.
I think we are all aware of the issues with anything new but you can't hold back progress, this has been out for a while now and standard on new machines, so plenty of reviews to chew over, perhaps even do a search on your PC / Laptop for any issues with the upgrade
As this is the last day I felt it only right to alert people as the saving is immense, I know you can't please all the people all of the time but on the other hand you have to have an open mind, people have differing wants and needs, hopefully this has been useful for anyone who had perhaps thought about it but forget as too busy working, I am retired doing all so just trying to help others
Thanks for all the comments, it is these that help people decide and make the site so intense and exciting
I have to use this at work & occasionally on my Mac using Fusion (grudge use)
I wouldnt mind if the OS was improved incrementally...small changes at a time
Apple also get it wrong...e.g. the Itunes version 11 which is a dog to useBREXIT - done properly.

My daughter would pay more than that to upgrade her Windoze8 to XP.A vaccine does not stop you catching a virus, or passing it on, or getting ill from it, really ill. It does reduce the likelyhood of you dying when really, really ill. Stay Alive - KEEP AWAY FROM PEOPLE.
