No shudder for me yet, but only been as low as -2 deg C on start. My neighbour's D4 does it when its not been charged for a while, but hardly conclusive.

If you press the start button without the brake pressed, wait 8 seconds and then press the brake and the start button is the stumble as bad (trying to check if one can emulate the behaviour pre start button) ?

I tried this yesterday ..pressed the start without brake pedal ..waited for glow plug light to go out ...then started it up a couple of seconds later.

Result Thumbs Up no shudder

Now obviously this is not an extensive test (once Laughing ) but it certainly seemed to make a difference.
Will continue with this & see how I get on. It certainly seems to point at glow plug warming times

Come on you lot ....Give it a try & post results Thumbs Up
 Cheers Ian

I often start the car when v. cold (no brake pedal), let all warning lights go out (often use this time to check the oil level on the dash), turn it off, turn it on again (no brake pedal), let all warning lights go out, press brake pedal and start the engine
Shudder gone or significantly removed

I thought pretty much all modern diesels have an FBH, to avoid hypothermic occupants - it's the timed/remote control for it that's the option isn't it?

That aside, mine also feels 'lumpy' from very cold - will have to try the same trick too!

Apologies - I didn't think FBH was fitted to GS. Heard it fire up and what looked like steam coming from under the car. At least I hope it was that !!!!!!

Shudder

Yup. My new D4 shudders for brief second on start up. My 2010 XS didn't and that had an FBH.

I think this shuddering business must be a feature of Landrovers in general.
My 62 plate FL2 loan car does it worse than my disco !!

does it with MY 09/10 Merc ML's....collected quite a few over these cold months, often when the car has been parked on a slight driveway slope for a few days with low fuel levels...rough as old boots then around 30 seconds later, fine.

worst out of the merc range...."E-class"...leave um parked up for a few days with little fuel in em, almost stuck to the ground...

Car back from second visit to dealers re:- "shudder".

They gave it a right good seeing to i.e. diagnostics - no errors, smoke test, egr checks, glow plugs and glow plug temperatures, FBH check, compared with another vehicle of similar vintage etc.
Diagnosis - NO apparent problems !

Guess it must be a "feature" and so I will stop worrying about it and get on and enjoy the car.

Hi I work at Lr main dealer in Kent
Probably worked on / driven hundreds of d4's
They all do the shudder / miss fire just after start up when it's cold
but as said above if started with foot off brake till glow goes out all start no shudder.
