About To Be Converted (Well Not Really) |
|
Hi All,
Having driven a V6 Tdi VW Touareg from new for the last 4 years, I've decided its time for change. The Touareg is a great car and I'd never say a word against it but its just so let down by shoddy customer service from VW.
Anyway, I've always been a fan of Land Rover and have owned many in the past, (I still have a 95 V8 Disco with no rot, no leaky sunroof and 70,000 genuine miles!)
I looked long and hard and finally bagged myself an ex demo D4 HSE which arrives this week.
Its going to work for a living towing an oversized German caravan, launching my boat & taking the horse to weekend shows.
So I'm looking forward to learning the little tips n tricks, the Tourareg had a few unwritten tricks up its sleeve whats the Disco4 got ?

Thanks for the welcome !
I've read a few horror stories with regard to customer service, but they're nothing compared to my experiences with VW.
Whats the first hidden gem I need to look for when I get in ?

Gods honest truth, wheel arches all nice & intact, boot floor solid & sound, two working sunroofs - no leaks. Not a bit of clear silicone in sight !

Well I've had the D4 a couple of weeks now and have to say that generally I'm pleased, but not extatic.
The seats are not as comfortable as the VW (Disco's are much more firm) but the multitude of adjustment does allow for a decent ride.
The MFD is a little lacking, kind of basic really. Maybe it just needs getting used to.
Vehicle set up options are limited compared with VW, things like convenience settings & lighting.
On the plus side:
Gearbox and engine are silky smooth and fuel consumption is much better.
Command shift is very handy.
Air suspension is pretty cool and makes up for the firmer seats.
More on road kudos.
Much more space in the back.
More seats (that I'll probably never use)
Mrs prefers it.
On the whole its a better car than the 09 Touareg I had from new.
Having trawled the forum for info the following mods seem in order:
1. Cool box in the cubby.
2. Remote parking heater.
3. LED Reverse lights (why are they filament lamps when the others are LED?).
4. Extra set of wheels & tyres (previously used Grabber UHP's on 18" rims for the odd off road foray, recommendations welcome).
Is there a diagnostic software available? I'm used to using VAGCOM/VCDS for the VW as many features can be enabled which the manufacturer hides. Do LR do the same, info seems a little sketchy, all I can find is faultmate, what exactly does it do?
Anyway, enough rambling.

VW had no quirks that I can think of, its a thoroughly decent car that ticked all the boxes. Actually yes it did have a couple of niggles. Touaregs are really susceptible to transmission wind up from uneaven tyre wear. All 4 tyres must be within 2mm tread depth otherwise your asking for trouble. Therefore all 4 tyres must be replaced with the same type & tread pattern at the same time. Centre prop shaft bearings also fail around 60,000 or 6 years, (I believe its a similar issue with Freelanders).
I do miss not being able to preset the cruise speed and ambient lighting levels in the footwells and headlining, and where's the sunglasses holder?
The dash and window button illumination seems a bit 1980's on the D4 (bland green) and I expected a full colour display - but its no big deal, I should have done the test drive in the dark
Are there any "secret" button configurations on the D4 that allow access to hidden NAV/set up menu's?
