I think I read somewhere that the front headrests are the way they are because of the integrated air-bags. If that is the case, then we're likely to be stuck with them the way they are. I don't think we can even get away with fitting something over the top of the existing ones to pad them out in any way.

Coffeecup, you are correct. The seats with fixed headrests are absolutely attricious in all ways. The air bag in the seat is not even required with all the side curtains anyway.

The headrests are not adjustable becuase of lawyers. In the US, any adjustment renders the headrests less than safe. This mens LR could get sued.

Hence no adjustements, we all find them uncomfortable, and LR scores very well (only one of 6 cars that get 'excellent' safety rating) and hence, no lawsuits.

That's funny because every u.s. made vehicle that I've owned has adjustable headrests....

I don't know if anyone has noticed this, but the front seats in our Discos are just the same as the ones fitted in Volvos, even the adjusting levers.. just with a diferent looking headrest, but also fixed ones.

Ford Group parts sharing perhaps?

Land Rover worked with Volvo on safety when the Disco3 was designed. So they may well be similar not just to keep costs down. The test results that were referred to back in 2006 are here:

Uncomfortable sitting posture since the headrest not adjustable. Totally agree.

I had two Volvos in the past Whistle neither of which had ajustable head rests. Am guessing that it certainly is safety related and part of Volvo's design. I don't believe that any current model Volvos have adjustable head rests.

I presume the head rests have no other safety features in the D3? I.e. in a lot of Vovos the head rest moves into a different position when a rear end collision is detected so that it supports exactly the right part of the neck at the point of collision, which is why they can't be manually adjusted.

Personally, I don't have a problem with the seats. I am pretty tall though (6'3" ish).
But lets be honest, you can't buy a landy and then complain about practicality. We drive them because we love them right?

There not Head Rests there Head Restraints designed to stop your head from over extending in the event of a crash (bored so reading old posts)

I swapped my D3 seats for D4 seats and the head rests are now adjustable. The main difference I believe is the carry over from the D2s of the grab handle at the side of the head rests. If they were not fixed, these would not be strong enough to grab onto.

My 2 cents

I know it's an old thread, but has anyone tried removing the grab handles to see if the headrest will then adjust up and down?
