| My new (second hand) Discovery HSE in Nara Bronze |

About to pick up my 2009 (late 09) Discovery 4 HSE presumably one of the first, as it was not launched, I believe, until the Autumn. It is Nara Bronze, I suspect a love it or hate it colour. Not my first choice but you can look for ever for exactly the right spec. Recovering from a knee op with plenty of time to check out cars on EBay I progressed from losing a bid on a Disco 2 to a trip (my wife's idea) to cheer me up by looking at newer ones at the Dealer's. That changed me for ever.The one I thought was great had just sold but not to be deterred, again with time to kill, I found another at a dealer not too far away. Priced more keenly than the first one (By £5K) I was looking for the snags but there are none. It has side steps, tow bar and cameras to see if the wheels are still clean (or so it seemed). Unmarked too and with 46k on the clock. It is due for a service so that is being done. I can compare it with my wife's ML270cdi and the pair of Mavericks/Tributes I have been driving. There is no comparison. So much more comfortable and well equipped but so quick too. Nearest comparison is my wife's ML and that is so slow particularly if you set off by climbing a hill. My only worry is reliability although the first year is covered by the assured programme. Hope the body does not need to be lifted off for some failure 13 months on! Of course the dealer says they are now really reliable (is that 13MY reliable or 10MY reliable?). They would say that as they tried to sell a lifetime paint treatment and GAP for £1k plus!
Anyway, delighted so far and all has gone smoothly. The dealer has been good about sorting trivial details like a rubber door handle plug missing, finding an ipod lead etc.

Ask the supplying dealer to check that all 6 of the glow plugs are working before you hand over your money/sign on the dotted line otherwise the body will have to be lifted!
If they're not, they need to sort that out otherwise you will end-up with a VERY expensive (c. £2.5k) problem on your hands in a few years time. The car was designed and built with 6 fully functional glow plugs; it should still have 6 fully functional glow plugs.
Nara Bronze is a great colour.

Thanks Steve, helpful advice. The dealers are being very thorough. I asked them to check all service recalls had been done and they said these are all checked as part of the PDI to qualify for their assured programme. Is it not reasonable to assume that the glow plugs will show up when they attach it to their magic box or is there some specific check to be carried out?
My wife's ML had the glow plugs done, I was going to do it myself but got faint hearted at the thought they might be stuck fast and fracture in removal. The main dealer charged several hundred but nothing like £2.5k! Wow, LR are really a premium brand when I start thinking of Merc as cheap!

Unfortunately, glow plugs will not log any error codes in the ECU as they are not monitored by the ECU (at least they aren't on a D3). The only way to test them is by using a digital multimeter to test the resistance between the glow plug terminal and the common ground. This can be done reasonably effectively via the two multiplugs that supply power to the glow plugs on top of the engine (once the black plastic cover has been removed).
There have been many discussions around glow plugs on here recently due to cold weather we're experiencing. Several members have been stranded in the Alps, unable to start their engines due to failed glow plugs over the last couple of months. Another member, local to me, has now lost all 6 glow plugs in his 2005 D3. I am two down, last time I checked.
The glow plugs in our engines are only M8 in diameter I think and they have a tendency to seize inside the cylinder head. If they snap-off whilst being removed, the cylinder head typically has to be removed which is a body off job (up to 40 hours labour according to Disco_Mikey). The cylinder heads then have to be skimmed before replacing everything.

Not trying to scare you off the car because they really are great cars to drive and own. Just making you aware that if you want to use the car in colder climates than the UK, then you really do need to have a full set of functioning glow plugs. Some cars start with little bother with fewer functional glow plugs. Others don't.
I'm not sure if it will affect your Land Rover Assistance policy but you will need to find a good independent LR specialist when that expires unless you want to pay the ridiculous amounts that LR dealers charge for labour these days.
One member, only yesterday, was quoted £900 just to replace brake discs and pads all round on his D3. 
This is probably a four hour job with parts totalling not much more than £350 (even for Genuine LR).

Has it been confirmed that the D4 3.0 has the same seized glowplug issue as the D3 2.7? 06 D3 SE / 15 LR D90 XS SW / 88 LR 90 Td5 / 68 BMW 2000 ti

In another thread, Boringoldgit confirmed that the thread diameters are the same ( M8 ) but different part numbers.

Thank you again for helpful advice. I am familiar with the snags and the will start/won't start from my wife's ML. All the same and sadly as glow plugs are a bit like spark plugs they are expendable. In fact if you don't remove them young, they will seize, so lasting a long time is not necessarily a good thing.
We have a good indie here in town, or so I am told by a Defender owner.
Thanks for all your encouragement and support for marmite colour! It will be known by that from henceforth. In our household even the dog loves marmite, so appropriate really. Brian - East Sussex

Broadsword, although this forum is full of very helpful people and great advice, you have to bare in mind two points:
1/ People always post when they are having problems and rarely when everything is going great.
2/ If you're having problems it's comforting to think it's a design fault rather than you're just being unlucky.
Welcome to the forum - Nara Bronze is my favourite colour... after Fuji White obviously
(P.S. I'm on my second disco after 180,000 miles of basically trouble free business motoring without a single lost day of work - something I couldn't say about the merc's and volvo's I drove previously)

Nara Bronze was a new colour released to coincide with the launch of MY10. I had one for two years and loved the colour but MY12 came up with Firenze Red so ..................

As a keen new owner I picked up the 2010MY brochure off of EBay. To my surprise it says the DPF is an option. I thought by late 2009 all diesels had dpf. I assume my brochure is a UK edition as the address etc is a UK response.
Is there a quick and easy way to tell if my 3.0 TDV6 MY10 (registered 09) has a dpf fitted. I know there are comments elsewhere about increased engine speed and heat smells when a dpf is fitted but just wanted to know ahead of time. I do not pick it up until Friday.
I am delighted there is such support for the Nara Bronze. Mine also has a "possible" upholstery rather than a recommended colour with Ebony leather. Recommended is almond. It does not look bad though i accept that almond is great, if less practical for day to day use and when creased with age (I am keeping it a long time). Brian - East Sussex

DPF's did not become a standard fit until MY11.
Nara Bronze is the best colour, but I might be biased Looks brilliant but even better when the sun is on it - if we ever get any!
