Insurance and swing away spare wheel carrier

It has been suggested by my independent LR dealer that the fitting a swing away wheel carrier could infringe my insurance Rolling Eyes I'll be checking with them tomorrow. The garage also advised that new EU regulation limits any overhang of the bumpers for crash safety requirements. Has any forum member knowledge concerning this ruling Question
I'm now not rushing into purchasing a wheel carrier until I can find out something concrete about this Exclamation
Comments welcome please Bow down

So that has implications for toolbars on the rear and A bars on the front. Although the wheel carrier is a bit bigger than those.

I've had a wheel carrier for years. No problems with either NFU or Aviva insurance.

I'm fairly sure the regs apply to newly manufactured vehicles rather than after market, though you will still need to ensure that your lighting is visible at all times with the carrier in the open position.

As for insurance ...it is a modification which ever way you look at it and therefore you should notify your insurer regardless. Smile

Both of the companies I used / use were very laid back about the wheel carrier (and snorkel etc).

Just be open and honest - if in doubt ask before purchase what impact it would have on your premium.

Thanks every one for your comments.

I have contacted my insurance and they are perfectly happy with me fittng a swing away wheel carrier.

Out of interest the only items they would require notification were mods to the suspension and remapping the engine.

What they would not cover would be the fitting of the old steel bull bars Exclamation This type of extra would have to be the plastic low impact type specifically designed by the manufacturer and have gone through the safety test and approval programme.

Now I know Rolling Eyes
