Wheel bearing replaced

The car is now at 50K, over 3 years old and out of warranty.

Started to hear a noise which was diagnosed by an independent as the drivers side front wheel bearing. £270 later and all is back to normal.

Is it usual for these bearings to go?

I have just had two replaced on my 2008 D3 at 58K miles.

Apparently at 2.7 tonnes, they are prone to going through wheel bearings

You'll know when they go....I got a horrible metal on metal grinding noise when on anything more than a few degrees lock.

I'm no mechanic but I don't think they would be classed as preventative maintenance....I would wait until they fail
