no self centre from left lock.. |
|
drove out from home and had not even reached the main gate when somethi g did not feel right.
steering wheel a few degrees off clockwise and a slight drift left....previous experience says this is a low/flat tyre..
stop..check tyres ..all ok
the more I drive the more I feel. the self centering isn't so much from left lock and is extra from right lock.
so I stop and apply full left lock and pull away with no hands on wheel....car stays on left lock
so I stop and apply full right lock and pull away with no hands on wheel..car. returns to straight..
so my self centering device from left lock has obviously fallen off...
cant get to dealer today as car reg number restricted on wed...so will have to pop in on thurs.
bit of a pain as I am offroading on sunday.
have not driven anywhere out of the norm so seems strange to just appear.
are the track rods that succeptable to moving? It is better to have and not need it then need and not have it.

I would doubt a track rod has moved, more likely an internal fault with the rack. Daft question but wife hasn't driven the car and clouted a rock/kerb?

Do the front wheels look right? If a wishbone bolt comes loose, or a wishbone has cracked it could have a profound effect on steering.

I peeked at the rods and nothing amiss..went offroading a bit on sunday and seemed ok on the way there and home with five in car so may be I am abit over sensitive...could not replicate issue...very odd.
so I suspect the suspension may have beenlow on one corner.I cycled the suspension In befoe I parked up and all seemed better the next day.
and as for restriction..yes
the restriction is by registration last number in Beijing they have odd and even days
in Chengdu ( where I am ) every day. two mumbers are restricted ( by restricted you cant enter 3rd ri.g road.)
this was a measure to help with traffic jams..however it has no effect as people justbuy a seco d car....ie my wednesday car is a smart...I only drive it on the day I cant f
drive the disco. ( and I avoid driving the passat ends with same restrictive reg as disco....)only I drive (Wife cant)
the law was introduced a while back...not so good for my buddy who has an extensive car collection from ferrari to rolls but all end on 7 his lucky number so one day a week he and his wife (who has matching cars all ending in 7) both drive smarts one day a week...
also ....got a nail in rear tyre when offroading....again...must remove magnets from wranglers...
almost due a other oil change (every 6000km here) so willget a good check out. It is better to have and not need it then need and not have it.

Hi, this sounds like it might be caused by the steering coupling seizing up, they are failing causing the problems you discribe, very similar to the way they go on old coil sprung vehicles defender, range rover, discovery 1, they are about £60 and a couple of hours to fix by wiggling them out as a bit more buried at the bottom of steering column 😊 how do you put pictures on here as have a picture of old one that was changed?
