Hi
have a Dicovery3 TDV6-08.
My average milage is 13,75 litres/ 100 kms. equals 17,1 mpg (US), 20,5 mpg (imperial)
The on board computer calculates better than 12.0 litres/100kms. 19,6 mpg (US), 23,5 (imperial) A substantial difference.
What is wrong?

It is generally accepted that the on-board computer is very optomistic regarding fuel consumption - in my opinion it serves very little purpose, as it isn't accurate & doesn't provide "instant" figures, merely an average over a period of time.
Your consumption seems poor but climate, driving conditions & driving style all play a part, as do tyres & their pressures. Are you doing a bit of off-road driving?
My D3 manual & is remapped by Pete Bell BAS & I get a true 25-28 mpg (Imperial).

no just doing mixed town and country driving.
Also getting Engine system failure frequently.
Error codes P023D and P0101
Kind of hopeless not finding what is wrong. Workshop has tried.

I managed to get mine to average 30.1 mpg,it improved massively when I changed my driving style and also put some redex in,my main journey is mixed, mainly from stoke to Shropshire and I reset it every time I put fuel in,if someone wants do the maths I get about 780-800 miles per full tank if that makes sense

Well, I'm getting about 25mpg - about 420miles to th tank, so don;t see how you're getting 30mpg and 780+ to the tank, doesn't add up. 550 would be about right. Mark.

Discos have a 18 gallon fuel tank so you 780/18=43mpg.
Which seems rather high. In loving memory of FA54WSK.
Rest well old friend, your work is done.

I understand your D3 is remapped. It might be best to talk on the 'phone to the principal of the remapping business & share your concerns with him. It is quite possible to produce a different map, which might suit your requirements, including improving MPG.
The difference between calculated figures & the display is perfectly normal, mine over reads by 2 -3 mpg.
Some people have found that adding 2 Stroke oil to fuel, improves consumption - it's worth a try.

Hi all
Im currently looking at buying a TDV6 which will be used for everyday stuff and occasional long trips. When it comes to getting the best MPG out of it is it best to stick with Manuals? From what i have heard the Auto is a bit more juicy compared to a sensible driver with a manual. Seems to me though that on a long run it shouldn't make much odds especially if you can get it to stick in 6th gear (command cruise?).
Im not sure if its the price point i'm looking at (12-14K) but there seem to be far more Autos especially in the posher HSE.
Any advice much appreciated.

Welcome Egg. A.
Whereabouts in Hampshire are you?
Yes - manual should give you an advantage of 1 to 2 mpg.
It seems fairly clear now that adding 2 stroke oil to fuel can add another 1 to 2 mpg.
In the last 3k miles using Castrol Actevo 2T I have recorded true fuel consumption of between 26.7 & 28.6 mpg - driven fairly hard. My D3 is 2009 Manual chipped by Pete Bell (Bell Auto Services) - currently 38k miles.

Thanks for the quick response, I am currently in Ringwood.
1-2 mpg difference is not too bad from my point of view, i had imagined worse.
Interesting re two stroke oil, has anyone compared the cost of buying the oil verses the increase in MPG? Seem to remember from previous days on dirt bikes that its not that cheap!

Well it's the first week of ownership and I'm well pleased with manuals mpg - 31.8 avg and rising every day. I do have the advantage of 50-70 mph motorway cruising for my daily 50mile commute!
Wonder if its been remapped by a previous owner!

I have an 55 pleate Auto which I have had from new, until I came on this site I averaged 22.5 MPG (on the dash reader).
However after reading the posts in here I have:
1. Balnked EGR's
2. Cleaned MAP sensor
3. Add 2 stroke Oil to fuel every 2nd fill up.
I also change oil and filter at half recomended milage and fuel and air filter once a year (it is very dusty in southern Spain and fuel quality seems to vary a bit).
I now average 24.2 MPG
I drive usually around 80 -90 mph on the motorway to and from work and we have some very steep mountains round here. I also drive on very bumpy tracks at weekends to various fishing spots.
I really would recomend the above to any one, certainly the 2 stroke oil had other benifits i.e. much improved from the lights!

all this talk of doing the maths
theres a really good iphone app
" Road trip "
that amongst other feaures will calculate the fuel consumption in what ever units you desire ltr / miles, ltr/km, gal/mile, gal / km etc etc
it can also be used to log service and repairs , and it all can be saved to excel too
crackin app
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/road-trip-...98207?mt=8 Nine-tenths of wisdom is being wise in time.
Also appears 9/10 of stopping is stopping in time

Road trip is bril, esp the paid for app as it does multiple vehickles. My D3 is still showing 25.89 over 99k miles, with probably 75 - 80% of that cruising at 60mph on the Mway.
