TPMS & Moving wheels around on D4

I’ve just got a quote from a tyre fitter close to where I work for two new AVON AX7s for my D4.
The worn ones are currently on the front, but when I mentioned that I want to swap the front and back wheels over at the same time so the new tyres will end up on the back I was told they would need to take the tyres off the back wheels to swap the TPMS sensors over.
They insist that once the TPMS sensors have connected to the car they cannot then be moved to another corner as they won’t connect.

I’m 99% sure this is rubbish.
Can anyone confirm this please.

Soon after getting my D4 in late 2019 I decided to move to 19” wheels from the 20” on there to get a wider range of tyre choice, so I brought 4 brand new wheels and tyres from an online supplier who also fitted brand new Genuine LR sensors.
I just put the new wheels/Tyres on, drove the car up the drive and they sorted themselves out.
But in all this time have not swapped the wheels around on the car.
Heaven doesn't want me, and hell is afraid I'll take over.

Sounds like 100% rubbish to me ! Why not just swap the wheels over and if there are any issues take it back at that point... if you run the tyres at the same pressure all round then there should be no difference whatever !
I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

Thanks guys

Was doubting myself there, particularly as the place in question has a good reputation.
It's an independent not one of the large chains.

Incredibly, I had a technician at a main dealers telling me similar nonsense early this year.

I regularly swap wheels around on my FFRR as I did on all my Disco’s. TPMS just sorts itself out. Worst scenario I’ve experienced is the system needs a short drive to sorry itself out. Although I can’t recall the last time that happened.

Thumbs Up

I expect the tyre centre are just covering themselves, as some systems, (not Landrover) do require reprogramming.
But most are like Landrover & as long as the sensors are registered on the system when they are installed, you can swap them around as you like. Then take for a drive to register the correct pressures etc.

regards
Steve

Over the years I’ve bought numerous sets of “take off” rims, all with TPMS valves factory fitted. Never had to register the valves or anything at all.

Correct, the set of TPMS valves from you when fitted worked no issues at all.

They all came off stripped down “take offs”. A side hustle for a couple of techs. Laughing

Thanks all.

It's actually turned out that it's going to be easier for me to go elsewhere to get the tyres fitted, so I won't have the pleasure of explaining the LR system to the original guys.

I may even end up rotating the wheels myself over the weekend.
It's always a good opportunity to have a good look around the wheels, tyres, brake hoses, pads etc and spot anything untoward early, when not distracted by concentrating on a particular bit of maintenance like changing pads etc.
Heaven doesn't want me, and hell is afraid I'll take over.

TPMS systems silently identify a swapped wheel and understand after a short drive that the new sensor that has appeared in a new position belongs to the vehicle and continue to use its data.

This is the way that modern TPMS systems work and there is no re-configuration or sensor movement needed at all.

I have worked with TPMS supplier selection in the automotive industry and they all work like that. The tyre fitter needs to learn better or move to something else

Off topic (sorry) but does anyone know how long the battery should last? Mine are 8 years old now....

Normally the TPMS manufacturers guarantee 6-7 years of battery life for the sensors. That is what is guaranteed so most sensors will last longer but you are reaching the time when they would start to give up one by one. You will be alerted by the car when the battery level gets too low and it is time for a new sensor. And yes, the whole sensor needs to be replaced as the battery is integrated but they aren't really that expensive.

Personally I would just wait for the alert and change the individual sensor as they go. I don't see the point in switching the whole batch in advance for more than the sake of peace of mind. And as I live in the cold north I change wheels two times a year and will have natural periods where the wheels are easily accessible for the job.

Thank you, that's perfect.

I have two sets too, that I swap, so will be relatively easy to get done.
