Underbody protection
I am due to pick up my nearly new D4 shortly and it's a car I intend to keep for some years. It's some time since I owned my vehicle, having been on the company car/lease car roundabout for 18 years so haven't had to worry about beyond years3/4.
Do other new owners worry about underbody protection, I don't mean diff guard; sump guard etc.but the liquid kind. Do owners of new Discos have additional protection, such as Waxoyl carried out on their car? I've seen a number of adverts for a product called Kleen-Tec - is it any good or do Land Rovers come with adequate protection. Sorry for many questions. because whilst I always looked after my company cars, it's "different when they your own".
I was told there was no need on the new Discovery 3/4 and other LR products of the same generation due to the better underbody protection factory fitted - that said after the old D3 was 2.5 years old I did get it Wax oiled because she grounded several times before we got the coil lift kit.

No. My D3 is now 4 years old and is very sound after a life in mud, sand and winter salt roads. Looking underneath, the chassis rails are good, even with off-road scratches. The bits that need attention are the moving parts - steering components, certain electrical bits, compressor, etc, but that's normal in a working vehicle. There's rust on the rear chassis rail where the tow hook is but that's probably because I haven't fitted the cover for about 3 years and I often leave a D-shackle hanging there. I reckon it will take many years before that rust will threaten the integrity of the part. I believe that some folks waxoyl their cars and that might be fine for those who want a 15 year life but for me the car is good as it came out of the factory ... although it has been improved by the addition of a a winch, mantec plate, RLD sliders, yellow top, and a few bits more courtesy of 10forcash.
How'd you manage that... You must have stretched your neck a bit because last report I had was that this afternoon your D3 was being looked at by TFC who was having problems fitting the compressor and it won't go on... (his words...not mine...)The next American ex-pat that calls it a "truck" is going to find out what 2.7 tons feels like on their foot...

My 07 D3 had patches of surface corrosion on th chassis, I hope the D4 fares better, got new tyres the other day (ouch) and had it on the ramps to check wheel balancing and the car looked like showroom, no corrosion at all! So hopefully the D4 chassis will fare better over long term

Is there any difference between the D3 and facelifted model's chassis (or frame as they like to call it in the factory)?

I dont think there is any difference, they are essentially the same cars, the only differences are engine, suspension, brakes and..... price!

You say it because, even though I have one, its true!!!! I would still have my D3 if I hadn't changed it for an Audi! Just bought a D4 for peace of mind with warranty! And the 3 litre engine!!!
Are you thinking of one?

Nooooooooooooooo! My D3 is a second car and offroader, our main car is a Jazz. 45mpg and 100% reliability, neither of which I enjoy with the D3. When it comes to buy a reacement main car it's unlikely to be a LR product, I just don't need the hassle any more.

Yes, I have trawled the forum in the past and you have had a lot of problems with your discos! Believe me if you sell you will miss it dearly. I missed everyMinute of not owning one. Having the new gearbox In the A4 made me realise every car has problems!
I had problems In a car I that wasnt an LR ! At least in a Land Rover you have problems in a car
that you absolutely love! Even though it's an expensive car to runBut believe me, getting rid will Be a expensive mistake as you'll just have to buy another one like I did

I read the terrible gasman thread. Awful experience. Wonder how that turned out.
However, if I end up keeping this D3 (as opposed to upgrading) I'd be grateful for any recommendations for companies that can apply waxoyl without getting it in the glove box.PAGODA

Just read it too! I am keeping my D4 long term 5 years minimum (always say that with every car ) and am considering having this done to keep the chassis as pristine as it is now. Will be sure to avoid that company though! Thanks for the warning!
