Urgent: ripped plug off caravan and now lights flash
Hi all
I was unhitching on site and I got the 13 pin plug caught behind towball and moved car away, end result is 13 pin plug stripped off cables
I remembered I had an old 13-7 pin adapter in the car from old caravan and removed the 13 pin plug from that and fitted to the car.
Now when I plug the caravan into the car the lights flash individually from left side - right side - rear etc
After this it seems to work perfectly
Anyone have any ideas or is this meant to happen and not wired right before?
It’s a 2016 Swift Challenger

Not heard of this sort of thing before.
'Van make doesn't matter too much. They're all the same in this respect.
I suspect you have the 13-pin wired wrongly.

Hmm it looked ok so wonder if I've done some damage elsewhere on the run. Will spend some time googling it now.MY2023 Discovery 5 R-Dynamic 3.0

Could you try another trailer or caravan to test?

I am certain its not the car as van wasn't connected at the time
Just happened to have the plug trapped behind tow ball
EDIT: Does anyone know if Pin 12 is normally connected? I have connected it and wonder if it is some feedback line that wasn't in use before?MY2023 Discovery 5 R-Dynamic 3.0

Haha cheers both.
The cable was there so I've wired it as per some diagrams to pin 12 in the plug. Ill disconnect this and retest.
Be interesting to see what the Disco is putting out on that pin and the caravan manual says it isn't connected to anything but I reckon it must be
Edit: Found this online:
Previously allocated to trailer detection in ISO 11446:2002 (the vehicle could detect it was coupled to a trailer using a link between pin 12 and pin 3 in the trailer plug). This function was removed by ISO 11446:2004 and the pin reallocated to reserved. The pin remains reserved for future allocation in ISO 11446-1:2012.
Pin 3 being ground for all road lights. I guess it sends a pulse down the line.MY2023 Discovery 5 R-Dynamic 3.0

Having had to fix this sort of damage for folk in the past, replace the cable back to the junction box and have a good look at the box for damage. If you are very lucky the plug comes off the cable first, but the 13-pin one is well held on and can stretch individual cores. Later on in life there is a short in the cable and things really go wrong.A vaccine does not stop you catching a virus, or passing it on, or getting ill from it, really ill. Thanks, I’ve had a good look at the box and seems all good, the cable is well anchored under the a frame so think I was lucky there. I also metered every line to check resistance
Removed pin 12 and same issue then removed the Sargent vlm box I have which is used to generate the telltale sign on dash and problem has gone. Wondering if something has shorted as the plug was pulled, maybe the positive from battery or something and shorted the box out?
