V8 compared to the diesel

Still yet to decide on whether the diesel is the only way to go or should I consider the V8 option.
I plan on towing a van and doing considerable off road (outback ) touring.
Any help (comparisons) would help

I have no experience of the Outback, and how often you find fuel stations, but I guess that would be a major issue. Unless you fit extended tanks or carry loads of fuel, you will need to fill up a V8 every 250-280 miles (less if seriously offroad) whereas I expect you would get nearly twice as far on a tank of diesel.

Having said that, I am sure one of the Aus residents on here has a modified V8 that has been out a few times, just can't remember who?

Having had both , the only place the V8 falls short is on consumption and how Shocked

But much more drivable in heavy going , and of course non of the usual diesel issues like EGR , turbo , dirty fuel etc and it sounds great if you free flow it Thumbs Up

From own and other's experience, towing doesn't have much effect on consumption, roof rack and off-road does.
I love my V8 so I'm biased; you should consider the V8, external tank and some jerrycans on the rack.

I would venture that it is essentially a question of sound. The diesel has a little bit more torque and can be easily tuned to get more PS.
I have the best of both worlds: a diesel (tuned) on the Discovery and a V8 on my Mercedes convertible. Now I would not say no to a TDV8 on the D3.....

PS: my Series IIA was my first diesel, my Defender the second, my D3 the third.
The older I get, the better I was.

From experience, if you intend to travel around Oz, diesel is the only go. It is dangerous carrying jerries with pulp, and pulp is not available everywhere in the outback. So if you are intent on a V8 factor in a long range tanke and rear tyre carriers.
The V8 also comes with a very healthly price premium.
The V8 sounds nice around town but on the road watching the fuel gauge will scare you.

My old D3 was a V8. It had a 95 litre aux tank (originlly 110 l but after a few dings Very Happy ...). I purchased it due to to much lower capital cost (demo HSE with only 5 seats). It is a much simpler, so reliable and more powerful engine. Same for the new V8. I did some 600-700 km trips with it and no problem. I've been told that the V8 won't take kindly to Opal fuel (what's available in remote outback communities which won't give a high to the petrol sniffers) and the catalytic converters make it more likely to have a fire caused by igniting bush whenever parked. There's always a few compromises.

With the extra cost of the D4 V8 there was no way I could justify it. Also, it appears that the V8 must have the sun roofs, which was a no-go for my uses (things thrown on the roof rack might break the glass top), and besides, who needs/wants more sunlight when it's 40C in the bush?

The 0-100 time for a 3.0 TDi is close to the earlier D3's 4.4 V8. I'm not sure I wouldn't get into trouble with the extra slingshot of the new V8 Laughing

Everyone moans at the consumption of a V8 and yes, it can get down to about 9mpg if I blast everywhere but on a long run, driving at a steady 55 mph with cruise control on I can get 25 mpg which is the same average as my Audi Quatro was. With the car converted to LPG running at half the cost of diesel it actually equates to over 45 mpg cost wise compared to an oil burner. I realise that you may have a problem with LPG stations in the outback but for town and city, it's worth it.
All that said mine is the D3 V8, the D4 V8 has the performance of the old turbo which itself was very quick. The new TDV6 3.0 is not far short of my present performance but can be made better by chipping the engine. I also understand you can chip the gearbox to make it more responsive and more like a petrol. Anyone know anything about that?
Word of caution though, the LPG burns hotter than petrol and after 60,000 miles I'm loosing compression on two cylinders and suspect the valves are leaking. This can easily be repaired and the valves replaced for a couple of hundred pounds but the job is 18 hours for one head or 20 for two (because of the time in labour and the risk of the other one going it may be cost effective to do them both even though there's presently no problem with one bank). As I'm finding it difficult for anyone to touch the high tech engine it's going to cost the neck end of £2,000 at the main dealers to put right. There are stronger valves specifically designed for LPG available but if you don't do the mileage better to wait till they go if at all.

Don't disagree with your consumption figure, however onse you have some mud or off road tyres and a rack on board, then I think you will struggle to get above 20 anywhere.

Tell more.....

Wanted to change mine as well for a while now. Did you remove the cats, and did you go single pipe towards the rear or did you stick with the dual?

I see Flippies V8 reached 100K last week. Laughing

very interesting thread Thumbs Up .I am considering a 4.4 D3 to replace my rangerover(if i sell my challenge car).I have always had V8s,usually with lpg and now think i wouldnt be happy if i went back to diesel. When fitting LPG to the D3 where do most put the tank(s)? dont really want to lose the boot space or 7th seat.My rangie has a round tank in the spare wheel well and does between 200 and 230 miles on a tankful but also has the full size petrol tank,is something similar possible on the d3??
