Valve stem covers - the bling type |
|
Just had an advisory at the 2nd service from one of the Mechanics at Yeovil LR - in relation to the "bling" valve stem covers on my disco. When I had the new tyres put on (at 24.5K) the good 'ole boys at Kwik Fit added some metal (chrome look) sleeves and metal valve caps - apparently at YLR they had to cut off the valve cap (or stem, wasn't entirely clear) due to a corrosion issue on some other customers vehicle.... just thought I'd pass on the warning to any others with them fitted. I'm thinking a bit of copper grease might do the trick to prevent any nasties - or maybe (I should) just check the tyre pressures more often to make sure they don't seize....... Got iPhone? It Rocks!

The alloy cap corrodes to the steel thread.
Electrolytic corrosion is nothing new to Land Rovers, any contact between steel and alloy without a barrier will set off this type of corrosion. Coppaslip should help, but I would loosen/tighten them weekly just to be sure.
You should be doing that anyway when you check your tyre pressures. We all do that regularly don't we
