I called WD today and was told the policy is 'Major Care Lite'. It was being sold at £99 about 7 months ago as a promotion but it's now £135 and they're not allowed to discount the policy. To remove the 'Betterment' clause so they pay 100% of any major component failure repair/replacement provided the failure happens while out driving, its another £75 but excess remains at £50. Compared to other policies I've discussed with them for newer cars and much higher premiums, they almost seem half hearted about selling this policy so don't think I'll get far playing the waiting game for a discount.
Sturge - Thanks for the info on this. Really interesting option.

Older than mine? Fewer miles?

How bizarre. I called back to take out the policy and this time they called it 'Secure Care Lite'. Clearly a policy with many names! Am now insured.

So just to clarify, if I pay £210 per year with a £50 excess and I'm cruising down the road and suffer catastrophic engine failure, they will recover me to a suitable garage and replace/repair my engine and cover 100% of the cost, they will also do likewise should my gearbox go bang.
But lets say my gearbox just started playing up to the point where to rectify it would mean a new gearbox being required but because it was still working to a fashion, I would be on my own. Have I got that about right? Discovery 4 HSE

Dusty - Yes that's how I understand the cover albeit I opted to use my existing Green Flag rescue which I've just renewed and all I have to do to claim is get proof of being rescued and proof from the garage that it's been a major failure. Think it actually covers quite a lot more than the major components but will have to wait until policy arrives and will add major point to this thread. They also settled on £200 for the premium which covers 100% of component and labour costs up to the value of the vehicle with up to five claims in a year. Labour covered up to £200 per hour.

Dusty - lots of detail to this, and lots of variation on policy, mileage, betterment, excess etc.
If you read the small print it will tell you everything, then at least you're confident with what you're buying. My hunch is the vast majority of people with a beef regarding WD are those who are surprised when they come to claim because they haven't bought what they thought they had!

Blobby - Thanks for the info and look forward to an update when you receive the paperwork.
John C - You have certainly faired well out of your warranty, but I can't help but think you must have had a cast iron case, because had there been any room to wriggle out of your claim I'm sure they would!!
Maybe I'm just getting cynical in my old age but having paid so many different insurances over the years and never made a claim, the one and only time I did it was knocked back. Probably had a case for the ombudsman but I couldn't be bothered with the hassle, which is probably the reaction they are hoping for!! Discovery 4 HSE
