Winch Wiring Help needed please

Having problems with my winch, basically it will power out but not in. I can hear the solenoid clicking when I press the switch on the wander lead but when I put my meter on the terminals it does not switch 12v to the yellow terminal. it is an allbright type sealed solenoid with a permanent live feed, live return and an in and out contact.

Any ideas, is the solenoid goosed even though it clicks or is it possibly something in the winch itself?

If your sure the solenoid pack is working, you might have to check brushes(found spring on one of mine seized and as brush wore down it did not move).Once you are sure the armature is getting power check the relevant field terminal,if it is working in one direction swap your field winding connections and test if it does not move you prob are down to opening it up. Thumbs Up

The solenoid pack clicks but does not send 12v to the 'in' terminal, assume it should do as it sends 12v to the 'out'. Unless there is some complex way they switch???

Just to be sure I would be 100% that solonoid pack is working before you go at winch.I would reverse field windings and see if that works(in will be out and winch out in).If your problem is reversed you can be almost sure then that it is solenoid pack. Thumbs Up

Yes Andy you should have 12 volts to the out and armature.I had same problem and have a new solenoid pack on the way.I would reverse your IN and OUT wires to winch like I said and then you will be certain. Thumbs Up

The solenoid pack reverses the current through the field windings to reverse the direction. It therefore follows that the winch is fine if it powers out.

Check the solenoids themselves, as that's where the fault lies ...
